Trinity's Emodi; Colorado College's Merrifield Named SCAC Volleyball Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Senior outside hitter Maggie Emodi of Trinity University and junior libero Sophie Merrifield of Colorado College were named Players of the Week for week seven of the SCAC volleyball season.

 

 



 

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of October 6th – October 12th

MAGGIE EMODI OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior outside hitter from Omaha, Neb., has been named SCAC Volleyball Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 6th through Sunday, October 12th.

Emodi led Trinity to a 4-0 record last week, earning a non-conference win at Concordia on Wednesday, then sweeping the competition at the SCAC Group A Divisional Tournament over the weekend.

Emodi tallied a team-leading 55 total kills for an average of 4.23 kills/set, as well as posting a team-best 62 digs (4.77/set). She also had seven aces over the four matches, and posted double-doubles in each of the SCAC contests. Over the week's matches, Emodi hit a blistering .338 for the Tigers, finishing at .440 or higher in two of the four outings.

For the season, Emodi leads Trinity with 276 total kills and an average of 3.41 kills/set. She is also second on the team in both kills and blocks, as well as coming in with the third-best number of service aces on the year.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore outside hitter Madison Lee of Austin College had a strong weekend for the 'Roos, notching a team-best 23 kills in three matches for an average of 2.09 kills per set, while also adding 2.09 digs per set with five service aces. Austin College posted a 1-2 mark at the SCAC Group B Divisional in Colorado. Sophomore outside hitter Abbe Holze of Colorado College played in all nine sets to lead the Tigers to a 3-0 record over the weekend in conference play. The sophomore continues to lead the conference in kills, averaging 3.81 a set this season. At the SCAC Group B Divisional, Holze led the team in kills in every match, posting 37 kills on the weekend, and was second on the team with 35 digs to average a double-double. She also had five blocks - good for third on the team. Holze led the team with 10 kills and had 16 digs to begin the weekend in a sweep over Austin College, and followd that effort with a team-high 13 kills to go along with six digs in a win over Centenary College. She finished the weekend with a team-high 14 kills and three blocks to go along with her 13 digs in 3-0 sweep of the University of DallasJunior outside hitter Macey Poole of Southwestern had 35 kills to lead the Pirates to a 2-1 weekend at the second SCAC Group A Divisional, which was contested at Trinity. She added 40 digs (3.64 per set) and is currently ninth in the SCAC in that category, averaging 3.60 digs per set for the season. Centenary, DallasSchreiner and Texas Lutheran did not nominate anyone for the award.

 

SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SOPHIE MERRIFIELD OF COLORADO COLLEGE, a junior defensive specialist from Fairfax, Calif., has been named SCAC Volleyball Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 6th through Sunday, October 12th.

Merrifield played in all nine sets to help the Tigers to a 3-0 record over the weekend in Group B Divisional play. She led the team in digs and aces during the weekend, averaging 6.11 digs and 0.89 aces per set.

Merrifield started the weekend with a team-high 19 digs and two aces in a 3-0 sweep of Austin College. She followed that effort up with a team-high 14 digs and three aces against Centenary - another 3-0 sweep, and finished the weekend with a team-high 22 digs and three aces in a 3-0 win over the University of Dallas.

The junior already ranks in the top-10 in CC's record books for most digs in a single-season with 458 digs over the course of the 2014 season. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First-year middle blocker Rebekah Bowden of Austin College had perhaps the best weekend of her freshman season. In three conference matches, she totaled 20 blocks for an average of 1.82 blocks per set and added 1.64 kills per set and a .333 hitting percentage. Bowden had at least five total blocks in all three matches as the 'Roos went 1-2 at the second SCAC Group B Divisional. Sophomore outside hitter Jessie Koster of Dallas was instrumental in a 2-1 weekend for the Crusaders, boasting 36 digs in an exciting, 3-2, victory over Austin College. The libero added 11 digs in a sweep over Centenary College of Louisiana on Friday, and also recorded 12 in a 3-0 setback to No. 10 Colorado College. The sophomore did break the 400-dig mark on the campaign, and currently has 403 to lead the squad. Sophomore middle blocker Kirby Kincannon of Southwestern has 12 blocks over 11 sets of action, averaging 1.09 per set as the Pirates finished 2-1 at the second SCAC Group A Divisional. She had six blocks in Saturday's 3-0 sweep of Texas Lutheran. The sophomore also pitched in offensively with 26 kills. First-year middle blocker Rebecca Hayes of Trinity led the Tigers' defensive efforts during a 4-0 week of play, which included three wins at this weekend's SCAC Group A Divisional Tournament. Hayes tallied 16 total blocks in the four matches, averaging 1.33 blocks/set to lead the Tigers. Her blocking average for the week is nearly double her average of 0.71 for the season. In three of the four matches over the weekend, she recorded season-best totals in blocks, leading the team in each of the three contests. Her six blocks against Southwestern are her career-best. CentenarySchreiner and Texas Lutheran did not nominate anyone for the award.
