Trinity Holds Day One Lead at 2015 SCAC Men's Track & Field Championship

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Trinity University men have the early lead after Day One of the 2015 SCAC Men's Track & Field Championship which are being contested at Trinity. Official Championships Website | Team Scores | Complete Results

With six events in the books, the host Tigers accumulated 88 points after Friday's first round, followed by Texas Lutheran University who has 40 points in its inaugural SCAC championship meet. Southwestern University is third with 38 points, University of Dallas is fourth with nine points and Colorado College is fifth with eight points.

Cody Taylor of Southwestern (pictured above) made SCAC history in the pole vault, becoming the first male to win the event in three consecutive years. Taylor was the first to clear 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches to earn the victory. Miro Ronac Giannone of Trinity also clearned 12 feet, 11 1/2 inches, but needed more attempts to do so and placed second. Lars Besselaar of Trinity was third with a vault of 12 feet, 5 1/2 inches.

Trinity swept the top three places in the triple jump as Vincent Omegba took top honors with a leap of 42 feet, 10 1/4 inches. Louie Montoto was second at 42 feet, 7 inches and Mike McIntosh finished third with a best jump of 42 feet, 1 1/4 inches.

In the shot put, Texas Lutheran's Alejandro Briseno picked up the program's first-ever individual conference meet win with a toss of 45 feet, 8 inches. Trinity's Stephen Mason placed second for the second consecutive year with a throw of 39 feet, 10 1/2 inches. Jacob Gutierrez of Texas Lutheran placed third with a toss of 39 feet, 6 inches.

Southwestern's Tyler Adams earned gold in the hammer throw with a winning toss of 135 feet, 7 nches. Texas Lutheran student-athletes secured the next two places on the awards stand as Ethan Powell was second with a toss of 134 feet, 10 inches and Alejandro Briseno was third with a throw of 127 feet, 2 inches.

As the afternoon moved into the evening, attention turned to the track with the running of the 3,000 meter steeplechase and the 10,000 meters.

Trinity's Michael Erickson won the 3,000 meter steeplechase in a time of 9:50.48. His teammate, Daniel Henkes, chased down Colorado College's Conor Terhune in the backstretch and placed second in a time of 10:00.15 while Terhune was third in a time of 10:00.77.

After finishing second a year ago, Taylor Piske of Trinity cruised to the win in the 10,000 meters - traversing the course in a winning time of 35:08.21. Alex Medrano of Southwestern was second in a time of 36:35.95 and Brandon Douglas of Trinity was third in a time of 37:12.95.
