Big Second Round Propels Schreiner on First Day of SCAC Men's Golf Championship

The sixth-ranked Mountaineers trailed Trinity by a one shot after a shooting a first-round score of 299.

The Mountaineers had four golfers earn spots in the top 10 led by senior Jimmy Keener who rebounded from a tough start on the first three holes to shoot a 74 (+2) in the first round. He followed up his first round with a 70 (-2) in the second round, and currently sits in fourth place at even par. Keener tied for the lead in birdies with nine on the day.

Sophomore Matt McClung rebounded from a tough first round 76 (+4) to shoot a 70 (-2) in the afternoon round. His second round was highlighted by an eagle on 16, which put him at -1. Meanwhile, senior Cheyne Kendall, who also scored an eagle at 16, sits in eighth with a score of 147 (+3) while senior Zach Oliver, the defending individual champion, is tied for ninth with a 148 (+4).

As a team, Schreiner was phenomenal on the Par 5s, shooting -11 to lead the field. The Mountaineers also led the field in Par 4s at +19, birdies with 33, and eagles with two.

19th-ranked Trinity University, who held a one-shot lead over Schreiner after firing an opening round 298, slipped into second place after round two. The Tigers shot a 295 in the afternoon round to find themselves eight strokes behind the leader heading into Tuesday's finale.

Sophomore Redmond Lyons and senior Kalen Vos were the frontrunners for the Tigers all day long with both shooting a two-round score of 143 (-1). Lyons finished his second round out strong, earning birdies on three of the last four holes to earn a 70 (-2) and was consistent with Par 3's, shooting -2 on the day to lead the field. Vos was consistent throughout the day, shooting a 72 (E) and 71 (-1) in his two rounds and led the field in Par 4's at -1.

11th-ranked Southwestern University responded in grand fashion after a slow first round, shooting a 287 in the second round as they sit in third place for the tournament, two spots behind Trinity. The leader in the clubhouse after two rounds of play is sophomore Connor Murphy (pictured above), who shot the low round of the day with a 68 (-4) in the second round. Murphy started red hot, earning birdies on two of his first three holes, and finished even strong, scoring birdies on his final three holes to earn the lead. He total eight birdies on the day, good enough for second among the field.

Senior Jordan Cowart comes in tied for sixth, responding from a tough finish in round one to shoot a 70 (-2) in round two. He is tied for the lead in total birdies with nine throughout the tournament.

Rounding out the team standings out is 14th-ranked Texas Lutheran University, who sits in fourth with a score of 604 (+28). The Bulldogs are led by senior Adam Peterson who posted a two round score of 145 (+1) to sit in fifth on the individual leaderboard. Peterson was excellent on Par 5's, shooting -5 throughout the day which led the field.

Centenary College is in fifth with a total score of 620 (+44) and are led by senior Jamie Gibson with a two round score of 148 (+6), good enought for ninth place. He had a huge second round, shooting a 70 (-2) and finishing second in the field in birdies with eight.

The University of Dallas comes in sixth with a two round score of 712 (+136). The Crusaders are led by freshman Chris Eckes who has posted a two round score of 150 (+6), including a 69 in the second round. Eckes is also tied for the tournament lead in birdies with nine.
