LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - SCAC volleyball squads took a week off from conference play as the majority of teams competed in non-conference competition this past weekend.
Colorado College was the only team to play more than two games over the weekend as they hosted a home tournament over the weekend.
Next weekend, all eight SCAC teams will return to action for Divisional play. The northern schools (Austin College, Centenary College, Colorado College, and the University of Dallas) will be in Colorado Springs while the southern schools (Schreiner University, Southwestern University, Texas Lutheran University, and Trinity University) will be in San Antonio.
Austin College
The 'Roos put together a 1-1 weekend, falling to
Concordia (TX) is five sets before returning and defeating
LeTourneau in straight sets. Madi McVay has 12 kills and 13 digs to
lead Austin College in the loss against the Tornadoes while
Presleigh Watson added 10 kills and four blocks. In the match
against the YellowJackets, Madison Lee led the way with 11 kills
and 10 digs while Watson had 10 blocks and hit .500. Rachel
Fusselman led the way defensively with 53 total digs.
Colorado College
The 11th-ranked Tigers went 3-1 on the weekend in
Colorado Springs against some top teams in the country. The Tigers
opened the weekend with a 3-0 victory over Wisconsin-Superior
behind an 18 kill, 18 dig effort from Abbe Holtze. They followed
that up with a huge four set victory over ninth-ranked Christopher
Newport behind a 14 kill, 14 dig effort from Holtze. The following
day, 22nd-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan nipped Colorado College in a
five set thriller, winning the fifth set 16-14. Holtze wrapped the
day up in style though, defeating UC-Santa Cruz in four sets thanks
to 18 kills.
University of
Dallas
The Crusaders tangled went 2-0 on the weekend, picking up
wins over Jarvis Christian and Dallas Christian. Dallas swept the
Bulldogs 3-0, getting 10 kills form Jaime Birzer and 16 digs from
Jessie Koster. They followed that up with a 3-0 win over Dallas
Christian thanks to nine kills from Birzer while Koster added
another 16 digs. C.J. Broadbent finished the weekend with 60 total
digs.
Southwestern
University
Coming off their huge conference wekeend, the
Southwestern Pirates returned home for a pair of matches, going 1-1
on the weekend. The Pirates dropped a tough five set match to
10th-ranked Elmhurst, falling in the final set 15-13.
Kirby Kincannon led the Pirates with 16 of SU's 65
kills. Abbie Robb added in 15 and Macey Pool 13. Nikki Welch had 44
assists and Chandler Lentz led with 24 digs. The
Pirates came back later that day and swept the Hardin-Simmons
Cowgirls in dominating fashion. Kaitlyn Foster led the way with 13
kills while Kaitlyn Corbett added 15 digs.
Texas Lutheran
University
The Bulldogs went 1-1 in Georgetown over the weekend,
beginning the day with a tough 3-0 loss to 10th-ranked Elmhurst.
Kristin Fording led the way with eight kills while Megan Lee added
14 digs in the loss. The Bulldogs responded though with a huge 3-0
victory over Texas-Dallas. Three Bulldogs had 11 kills each in
Haley Lasseter, Anna Keeling, and Fording. Katie Darst had 30
assists while Lee picked up 27 digs.
Trinity
University
In the lone match of the weekend, the 14th-ranked Trinity
Tigers earned a tough four set victory over Our Lady of the Lake.
Maggie Emodi hit .300 in the matchup, hammering out a
match-leading 15 kills, and committing only three errors on 30
total attacks. She also tied the match lead with 21 digs. Layne
Hubbard hit .306, with 14 kills, three errors, and 36 total
attacks, while firing in a leading four service aces to go with 10
digs. Erin Cusenbary accounted for 11 kills,
while Erika Edrington made 34 assists and 12 digs. Shannon Courtney
added 10 digs to the column.
Centenary College and Schreiner University did not compete.
