LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference announces Carter Gates of Colorado College as an Honorary Player of the Week for the week beginning December 15.
Gates, a nine-year-old Colorado Springs resident who is battling leukemia, signed a 'national letter of intent' with the Colorado College men's basketball team on Tuesday afternoon.
Gates was joined by his parents, Monty and Kelly, at the signing and press conference prior to the men's basketball game against Johnson and Wales University.
CC was represented by head coach Andy Partee and junior forward James Lonergan, the team's liaison with Team IMPACT, which pairs college sports teams with local children who are sick or terminally ill.
Gates, a 4-foot-10 and one-half inch forward, will be Colorado College's sixth man against the Wildcats.
Gates was matched up with the Colorado College men's basketball squad through Team Impact, a non-profit organization whose mission is to improve the quality of life for children facing life-threatening and chronic illnesses through the power of team.
