AUSTIN, Texas – Austin College football player Madison Ross has been named to the CoSIDA/Capital One Academic All-America First Team, the organization announced today. Ross is the first Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference football player to earn this honor since 2009.
Ross, a junior running back from Fort Worth, becomes the first 'Roo football player to earn Academic All-America honors since 1999, and is just the third player in program history to receive this distinction. Previously, Gene Branum was a first team Academic All-American in 1981, and Joe Fox was a second team selection in 1998 and a first team selection in 1999.
A Business Administration major, Ross entered the fall with a grade-point-average of 3.92 and in addition to his excellence in the classroom he has also been a standout on the field. Twice this season, Ross was named the SCAC Offensive Player of the Week, and finished the season ranked second in the conference in virtually every rushing category. His 965 rushing yards in 2014 are the most for any Austin College player since Aaron Kernek in the 2000 season.
Ross is one of only 25 players in all of NCAA Division III to have earned first team honors for the 2014 season.
