LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All eight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference teams continued conference play this week as they began the last quarter of the schedule.
Centenary College continued a seven-game winning streak this weekend, defeating Trinity University and Schreiner University, remaining at the top of the standings with a record of 8-2 in conference play.
Texas Lutheran recovered from a loss last weekend with two wins at home, defeating Austin College and the University of Dallas. The Bulldogs are currently in second place with a record of 7-2.
Southwestern University split the weekend at home, defeating Austin College, but fall to Dallas. They remain in third place with a record of 6-3.
Colorado College took down Trinity for the first time since the 2012-13 season and also defeated Schreiner to move to a 5-5 record on the season.
Schreiner is in fifth place with a record of 4-5, while Dallas and Austin College are tied for sixth with records of 3-6. Trinity rounds out the standings with a record of 1-8.
Austin College
The ‘Roos traveled to Seguin, Texas to start the
weekend, taking on the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs. Despite a late
comeback, they weren’t able to overcome large deficit, and
fell 87-79. Thirteen players on the roster notched at least two
points in the game led by Kevin Graham with 14. Cedric Hudson and
Brian Baehl joined Graham in double-figures with 12 and 11 points,
respectively, while also tying for a team-leading five rebounds.
Baehl also added two steals and a block on the night. The Bulldogs
held a 42-30 rebounding advantage, leading to 16 second chance
points. The ‘Roos shot .473 on the night, but weren’t
as successful from beyond the arc, shooting .348 from long range.
The next night, AC came close to ending a five-game losing streak
as they traveled to Southwestern. The Pirates stuck it out,
however, and came up with a 50-48 win in the defensive battle. The
‘Roos shot .268 from the field and just .120 from three-point
range, while holding SU to .306 shooting. Baehl led the team with
14 points, while Hudson added 12. Baehl pulled down eight boards to
lead the team, followed by seven from Austin Freet. Cody Meyers and
Harry Hampden-Smith each pulled down six rebounds.
Centenary College
The Gents continued a seven-game winning streak this
weekend as they hosted Trinity and Schreiner in the Gold Dome.
Friday night, they took on the Tigers, defeating TU 77-64. Travion
Kirkendoll led the team with 19 points, while adding four rebounds,
three assists and a steal. Kendall Demouchet totaled 15 points in
the game, while James Sapp and Justin Cueto joined him in
double-digits with 14 and 10 points, respectively. Sapp pulled down
seven rebounds to lead the team, while Caden Cheramie dished out
six assists. The Gents shot .528 from the floor, while holding
Trinity to .422. Sunday afternoon, the Gents defeated Schreiner
78-71. After holding a 12-point lead at halftime, the Mountaineers
battled back to get within four points with 44 seconds to go.
Isiaiah Whitaker led the team with 20 points, eight rebounds
and four assists, followed by 18 points from both Sapp and Brandon
Campbell. Sapp added seven rebounds, two assists, two steals and a
block in the game.
Colorado College
The Tigers returned to Colorado Springs this weekend to
take on Schreiner and Trinity, earning wins over both teams. Friday
night, CC defeated the Mountaineers 68-56, led by Chris Lesnansky
and Justin Berardino who put up 15 and 14 points, respectively.
Berardino shot 5-of-7 from the field in the game and 3-of-4 from
beyond the arc. John Hatch pulled down a team-leading seven boards,
while Lesnansky, Berardino and James Lonergan each dished out three
assists. Lesnansky also made three blocks, a game-high. The Tigers
shot .471 from the field and an impressive .692 from three-point
range in the game. The following night, CC needed an extra five
minutes to pull out a win over Trinity, defeating the Texas Tigers
70-65 in overtime. Berardino was the only double-digit scorer for
CC, totaling 25 points in 36 minutes of play. Lesnansky led the
team with eight rebounds. CC shot .488 from the field and .429 from
beyond the arc, while holding Trinity below .400 in both
categories. Colorado College also shot .840 from the charity
stripe, missing just four shots in the game.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders split their weekend on the road, defeating
Southwestern on Friday, before falling to Texas Lutheran Saturday
night. Four Crusaders posted double-digit scoring marks on Friday,
led by 14 points from Mark Promberger. Lorenzo Gonzalez added a
season-high 13 points in the game, followed by Aaron Wyatt and
Anthony Johnson with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Tom Kaiser and
Wyatt each posted a game-high eight rebounds. UD held a 41-36
advantage on the boards. The following night, UD took on the
Bulldogs, but fell 80-74. Kym Malone put up 19 points to lead the
team, but the Crusaders couldn’t overcome the dominant
shooting performance by TLU. Kaiser and Promberger added 12 and 11
points, respectively, to round out the top scorers. Kaiser also
posted a game-high nine rebounds and two blocks in just 22 minutes
of play. Wyatt grabbed three steals in the game and posted a
team-high four assists.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers hit the road this weekend to take on
Colorado College and Centenary, falling in both contests. Friday,
Schreiner went down by nine points at halftime to the Tigers and
couldn’t come back, losing to Colorado College 68-56. Wes
Miller led the team with 14 points, while Jared Thompson was close
behind with 11. Stevan Guerrero posted a game-high 10 rebounds and
added five points. The Mountaineers shot just .358 from the field
and .190 from beyond the arc. Sunday afternoon, Schreiner
faced Centenary. Despite falling to a 38-26 deficit at halftime,
the Mountaineers fought back to get within four points with less
than a minute remaining in the game. The Gents hit five free throws
over the last 44 seconds to earn a 78-71 win. Dustin Bercutt, a
player who is averaging just 2.7 points per game, posted a
career-high 19 points in just 15 minutes of play, shooting 8-of-10
from the field. He also pulled down four rebounds. Guerrero posted
a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds, while
Thompson added 13 points.
Southwestern University
The Pirates hosted Austin College and Dallas this
weekend. Friday night, the Pirates couldn’t overcome an
impressive free-throw shooting performance by the Crusaders, who
made 30-of-36 shots from the charity stripe. Zach Whitlock notched
a game-high 14 points, and tied for a team-leading five rebounds.
Travis Kurtz added 13 points as the team’s only other
double-digit scorer of the night, also posting five rebounds and a
pair of steals. Blake Scott came off the bench and posted three of
the Pirates’ six blocks in the game. The following night, the
Pirates played in a defensive battle against Austin College, where
they defeated the ‘Roos 50-48. The Pirates held AC to .268
shooting and .120 from beyond the arc, but only shot .306 from the
floor themselves. Chris Molina led the team with 12 points,
shooting 4-of-6 from three-point range. Chris Lee was the only
other double-digit scorer, adding 10 points in the game. For the
second night in a row, Scott marked three blocks, while also
posting a team-high seven rebounds.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs bounced back after a loss on the road last
weekend to defeat Austin College and Dallas at home this weekend.
Friday night, the ‘Roos traveled to Seguin, where the
Bulldogs pulled out an 87-79 win. Jordan Kouremetis had a
career-night, posting a season-high 26 points in just 25 minutes of
play, while shooting 8-of-9 from the field and 6-of-7 from beyond
the arc. Kouremetis also marked a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity
stripe. Joseph Richardson added 12 points, while Sterling Holmes
rounded out the top-scorers with 11. Donte McGee led the team with
seven rebounds, while adding nine points in the game. The Bulldogs
shot .464 from the field and .500 from long-range, while also
holding a 42-30 rebounding advantage. The following night, the
Bulldogs started off quickly, holding a 17 point lead at halftime,
but Dallas came back strong in the second half, making it a four
point game with 25 seconds remaining. Sterling Holmes led the first
half charge, scoring 20 of his game-high 23 points in the opening
stanza. Kouremetis added 20 points in the game, while also pulling
down five rebounds and dishing out four assists. Thomas Verm added
13 points. McGee pulled down a game-high nine rebounds, while
also posting a team-high two blocks. The Bulldogs improved to a
.491 shooting performance from the field, but dropped to .286 from
beyond the arc.
Trinity University
The Tigers fell in both matchups this weekend, beginning
with a 77-64 loss at Centenary on Friday night. Matt Selling led
the Tigers with 22 points in the game, making six three-pointers.
Aaron Knopp was the only other double-digit scorer for TU, posting
14 points. Jimmy Clark added seven points and a team-leading nine
rebounds in just 20 minutes off the bench. The Tigers shot .422
from the field, but couldn’t keep the Gents away from the
basket, allowing them to shoot .528 in the game. The following
night, the Tigers were in Colorado Springs to face the other Tigers
team, hoping to match their win from last weekend. After holding a
three-point advantage at the break, CC was able to take a lead late
in the second half. A three-pointer at the buzzer by Clark tied the
game up and sent it to overtime, where CC outscored TU 15-10,
ending in a 70-65 defeat of Trinity. A.J. Pulliam led the team with
22 points, while Clark added 20, shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from
three-point range. Clark also posted four rebounds, which led the
team, while Matt Jones dished out six assists.
