LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All seven Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s tennis teams were in action this week.
Austin College took on two SCAC opponents on the road, while Centenary College faced off against an in-state foe. Colorado College faced two tough non-Division III opponents.
Schreiner picked up two wins in three matches this weekend. The Pirates perfect record came to an end this season as they fell to No. 20 University of Texas – Tyler in their third match of the week.
Texas Lutheran University went 1-1 on the week, while Trinity posted a 2-1 record on the week, taking down a nationally-ranked NCAA Division II team, but falling to another.
Austin College
The ‘Roos took on two SCAC opponents this weekend on the road, but fell in both matches. The began the weekend against Texas Lutheran with an 8-1 loss. Cedric Ambulo scored the ‘Roos only point in the match in a three-set win at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (11-9). In the No. 2 spot, Erik Meendsen narrowly lost, 6-3, 6-4, and the ‘Roos came just short in No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. The duo of Jeff Kubena and Jacob Morgan narrowly lost in the third line, 9-7 before Meendsen and Ambulo fell 9-8 (4) in the top doubles spot. The following day, AC took on Schreiner, falling 9-0 to the Mountaineers. SU swept through doubles play, with the No. 3 pairing of Morgan/Kubena putting up the biggest battle, but falling 8-6. In singles action, Meendsen took his opponent to three sets, but fell in the tiebreaker, 6-7 (7-9), 6-2, 1-0 (10-3). In the third line, David Smith put up a tough battle, but eventually dropped the match 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).
Centenary College
The Gents took on Louisiana College this week, but fell to the Wildcats 7-2. The pairing of Stafford Lyons and Andrew Borel teamed up in the top doubles spot to earn the first point for CC with an 8-6 win. The Gents entered singles play down 2-1 to the Wildcats. Stafford Lyons took the No. 1 singles match 6-4, 6-1 to earn the Gents only other point for the match. Borel fell in the No. 2 spot 6-2, 6-4.
Colorado College
The Tigers hosted two non-Division III opponents this weekend, but couldn’t come up with a win. CC began the week against Division II Colorado State University – Pueblo, but fell 8-1. The Tigers only point came from the No. 1 doubles pair of Jason Gutierrez and Jack Burger after an 8-4 win. In the No. 2 spot, Taylor Delehanty and Jake Peterson narrowly dropped their match, 9-8 (6). In singles play, CSUP took all six matches in straight sets. Sunday, the team took on Hastings College, but fell 7-2. HC swept through doubles play and entered singles with a 3-0 lead. The Broncos took the top three singles matches, but Burger put up a tough battle in the second line, forcing a third set, 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. Ross Sherman and Delehanty took the No. 4 and No. 5 matches, respectively, in straight sets. In the sixth-line, Ben Bacher forced a third set, but fell 2-6, 7-6 (4), 1-0 (6).
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers played three matches this week, putting together a 2-1 record throughout. The week began against Howard Payne University as SU swept the Yellow Jackets 9-0. The match began with doubles play as the top duo of Austin Carrola and Nick Pena posted an 8-5 win to get things started. The No. 2 pair of Stephen Rogers and Dayton Hancock and the No. 3 pair of Teg Lozano and Isaac Vasquez each posted 8-2 wins to give Schreiner a 3-0 lead heading into singles. Carrola, Rogers and Josh Ramirez each posted 6-0, 6-0 singles wins in the match, while Hancock and Michael Holder only gave up one game apiece in their respective matches. In the No. 1 singles spot, Pena faced the toughest challenge of the day, but prevailed in straight sets, 6-4, 7-6 (4). Following the match against HPU, the Mountaineers traveled to Belton, Texas to take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor. SU saw a three-match winning streak come to an end against the Crusaders as they fell 6-3. The Mountaineers got out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but got off to a slow start in singles action. The No.3 doubles team of Lozano and Vaquez posted an easy 8-2 win, while Rogers/Hancock took the second-line 9-8 (6). In singles play, SU fell in straight sets at No. 1, No. 3 and No. 4 to give the Cru the lead. In the No. 2 and No. 5 singles matches, the Mountaineers were able to force a third set, but still came up short in the end. The final point of the day came from Christian Casillas in the No. 6 spot as he won in straight sets. In their final match of the week, the Mountaineers picked up another win, taking down SCAC opponent Austin College 9-0. Carrola and Pena took the No. 1 doubles spot by an 8-4 score before the No.2 team of Rogers/Hancock and No. 3 duo of Lozano/Vasquez each won their respective matches 8-6 to give SU a 3-0 lead after doubles. The Mountaineers kept it up throughout the match, as Pena took the top line 6-1, 6-2, Hancock took the No. 3 match 6-0, 6-2 and Ramirez lost just three games to win his match in the fifth spot.
Southwestern University
The Pirates took on regionally and nationally ranked competition this week, going 2-1 over the stretch. SU began with a match against East Texas Baptist University, taking down the Tigers 8-1. The Pirates entered singles play with a 2-1 lead after the duo of Niko Snovely and Grant Gideon took the top singles spot 8-4 and Sam McCready/Oliver Farmen took the third line 8-0. The Pirates swept singles action, but faced tough competition, with three matches going to a third set. In the top spot, Snovely rallied back from a second set loss to win 7-5, 5-7, 6-4. Ayinde Hall took No. 2 singles 6-3, 4-6, 10-8 and Neik Khansari needed three sets to win the No. 4 line, 6-2, 2-6, 9-7. At No. 3 singles, Oliver Farmen won in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5, as did Gideon (No. 5) and McCready (No. 6). The following day, SU got things started with an 8-1 win over regionally-ranked LeTourneau University. The Pirates swept all three doubles matches, giving up just four games. In the top singles spot, Snovely faced another tough battle, but was on the winning side of a three-set match once again, earning a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-3) win. Hall wasn’t able to post a win at No. 2 singles, but the Pirates swept the rest of the singles matches in straight sets. In the No. 6 spot, Rod Khansari gave up just one game. Later in the day, the Pirates faced their toughest competition as they took on 20th-ranked UT-Tyler, but fell 8-1. The Patriots jumped out to a 3-0 lead after doubles and continued their dominance through the top five singles spots. In the sixth line, William Ellis gave the Pirates their only point of the day, winning his match in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs took on two SCAC opponents this week, defeating Austin College 8-1, but falling to No. 7 Trinity University 9-0. In the first match, TLU faced the ‘Roos. They got off to a quick start, taking all three doubles matches. The top pair of Sanio Dizdarevic and Cliff Pack took their match 9-8 (9-7), while Wade Dillenbeck and Erin Beckenbach earned an easy 8-1 win in the second line. Kyle Thompson and Greg Nelson finished it out with a 9-7 win at No. 3. The ‘Roos lone point came at No. 1 singles as Pack fell in three sets. The Bulldogs swept the rest of the competition in straight sets. Dizdarevic earned a 6-3, 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot, while Ryan Beene and Beckenbach gave up just one game apiece in the No. 3 and No. 6 spots, respectively. Thompson took the No. 4 singles spot 6-4. 6-0 and Nelson earned a 6-3, 6-1 win in the fifth-line. The Bulldogs had their hands full with a strong Trinity team the next day as they fell 9-0 to the Tigers. In the sixth-line, Beckenbach put up the biggest fight, forcing a tiebreaker after winning the second set 6-2. In the end, the Tigers were able to pull out the tiebreaker, as Beckenbach fell 6-1, 2-6, 1-0 (17-15).
Trinity University
The Tigers competed in three matches this weekend, beginning with a road match against Division II No. 14 Midwestern State University. Jordan Mayer and Clayton Niess won No. 1 doubles 8-3, while Alvaro Hobbs and Manuel Brown took the No. 3 match 9-8 for the Tigers’ only points of the dual match. Chas Mayer and Eliot Guin played No. 2 doubles. Niess gave it a run at No. 2 singles, but came up short in a three-setter. The rest of the singles results were straight-sets wins for Midwestern. Jordan Mayer played No. 1 singles, Chas Mayer was at No. 3, Kevin Lee was matched up on the No. 4 line, Guin fell at No. 5, and Hobbs dropped his match at No. 6. The following day, the Tigers hosted Texas Lutheran and Division II No. 35 St. Mary’s University, winning both matches. TU opened the day with a 9-0 win over TLU. The Tigers gave up just two games in doubles play, as they jumped to a 3-0 lead heading into singles play. Adam Krull and Jordan Mayer took the No. 1 doubles spot with an 8-0 win, as did Alvaro Hobbs and Manuel Brown at No. 3. Charlie Curtis and Chas Mayer took the No. 2 doubles spot 8-2. In singles action, the Tigers earned straight set wins in all but one match. Krull took the top line 6-1, 6-2, Jordan Mayer took the No. 2 spot 6-0, 6-2 and Chas Mayer gave up just one game as he cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 win in the third line. Hobbs took No. 4 singles 6-2, 6-1 and Kevin Lee posted a 6-0, 6-0 win in the fifth line. Brown faced the toughest challenge in the sixth spot as he won a three-set battle 6-1, 2-6, 17-15. Later in the day, the Tigers faced St. Mary’s, winning the match 6-3. Trinity took a 2-1 lead after doubles in the match against the Rattlers. Krull and Clayton Niess edged their No. 1 doubles opponents 9-7, while Hobbs and Jordan Mayer took the No. 2 slot 8-3. Curtis and Chas Mayer came up just short at 9-7 on the No. 3 line. The Tigers went on to win four of six singles matches, all in straight sets. Krull won No. 1 singles, Chas Mayer was victorious at No. 3, Lee took the No. 4 pairing, and Hobbs was the winner in the fifth match. Jordan Mayer fell at No. 2 singles, and Eliot Guin lost at No. 6.
