LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga – Four Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s swimming & diving teams competed this weekend which kicked off the 2014-15 season.
Centenary College
The Ladies competed in a dual meet against Trinity
University this weekend, falling 121-58 to the Tigers. Chelsea
Russell earned two wins on the day in the 200 yard individual
medley with a time of 2:19.87 and in the 100 yard backstroke with a
time of 1:03.75. Russell also competed in the team’s 200 and
400 yard freestyle relays that each finished second. In the 200
yard freestyle relay, Jane Barney led the Ladies in fourth place
with a time of 2:09.81. Kayla Thornhill led the team in the 50 yard
freestyle, earning fifth place, but finishing less than a second
behind the winner with a time of 27.06. Barney also earned a fifth
place finish in the 100 yard butterfly. Christy Wolterman finished
second in the 500 yard freestyle with a time of 5:49.80 and earned
a third place finish in the 100 yard backstroke.
Colorado College
The Tigers competed twice this weekend, beginning the
season in a dual with Western State Colorado University, where they
fell 161-75. Mary Rose Donahue paced the team by taking first place
in both diving events. Ellen Silk earned first place in the first
individual event of her college career, the 100 butterfly. Junior
Megan Gillespie and freshman Justina Zuckerman each marked a pair
of top-three finishes. Gillespie earned second in the 400
individual medley and third in the 100 breaststroke. Zukerman
earned second in the 50 freestyle, finishing just .03 seconds
behind the winner. She also finished third in the 100
freestyle. Hannah Cooper and Emily Harrison each posted third place
finished in the 100 backstroke and 200 freestyle, respectively.
Less than 24 hours later, the Tigers won eight of 15 events at the
Buff Invitational Saturday morning. Five different Tigers were part
of multiple victories. The team took first in the 400 medley relay,
just before Harrison won the 200 freestyle. The team also earned a
win in the 200 medley relay. Zuckerman won the 100 freestyle with a
time of 57.77 seconds, while Harrison claimed first in the 500
freestyle with a time of 5:40.38. The team closed out the meet by
taking the top two spots in the 400 freestyle relay. Donahue
finished first in both diving events for the second day in a
row.
McMurry University
The War Hawks opened the season with a dual against the
University of Texas – Permian Basin on Saturday, but fell
62-112 in the women’s events. The War Hawks won both the 200
yard medley relay and the 200 yard freestyle relay, with times of
2:02.17 and 1:50.07, respectively. Robyn Remschel, a member of both
relay teams, also earned McMurry’s lone individual victory in
the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:01.96. Kelly McNamee was second
in the event with a time of 1:03.93. Samantha Spain finished third
in both the 50 freestyle and the 100 breaststroke, while Amber
Garrett earned a third place finish in the 200 freestyle.
Trinity University
The Tigers opened the 2014-15 season with a win over SCAC
opponent, Centenary College this weekend. Trinity won nine of the
11 total women’s swimming events. To begin the day, the
Tigers took a win in the 200 yard medley relay before taking the
top three spots in the 200 freestyle. Bethany Rysak earned
the win with a time of 2:01.43. In the 200 individual medley, Thea
Hesson finished in second place, less than a second behind the
winner from Centenary. The Tigers went 1-2-3-4 in the 50 yard
freestyle, with Lindsay Hagmann leading the way with a time of
26.21. Sarah Miller led the team in the 100 yard butterfly with a
time of 1:04.57, while Lydia Jones led in the 100 yard freestyle
with a time of 54.86 seconds. The Tigers took the six top spots in
the 100 yard freestyle. Sarah Miller finished first in the 500 yard
freestyle, beating the second place finisher by over 17 seconds.
The Tigers earned a first place finish in the 200 yard freestyle
relay with a time of 1:44.48. Kari Wilkins led the team with a win
in the 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.24, before the
team finished the day with a win in the 400 yard freestyle
relay.
