Football Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Austin College won its fourth game in a row while Trinity and Southwestern faced off in non-conference battle in week seven of the SCAC Football season.

The 'Roos used a 14-point fourth quarter to take a 27-20 win over SAGU while Southwestern and Trinity shined on the defensive side of the ball, with the Tigers taking a 22-19 victory on their home field.

Austin College
Austin College (4-2) returned to the road last Saturday as they took on Southwestern Assemblies of God (2-4) and were able to pick up their fourth win in a row, defeating the Lions 27-20. The 'Roos scored 14 points in the fourth quarter to break a 13-13 tue and take the win. 

The 'Roos rushed for 266 yards on the ground, led by Madison Ross with 124 yards on 15 carries and Bryce Murphy, who had 81 yards on 20 carries and two scores. Devin Smith added 61 yards on five carries and a 50 yard score. 

The play of the game came in the fourth quarter when Noah Jesko connected with Cooper Woodyard, who rumbled 57 yards for the game winning touchdown.

Defensively, Brooks Ward was outstanding, leading the red shirts with 15 tackles and a tackle for loss. Jantzen Foster added six tackles, an interception, and a sack. Kendall St. Romain added an interception of his own while Ben Bouchez had a fumble recovery.

The 'Roos will conclude their three game road trip in Conway, Ark. as they take on Hendrix College (4-2).

Southwestern University
In a non-conference matchup, Southwestern (1-5) traveled to San Antonio to take on Trinity (2-5). After fireworks in the first half, both defenses settled in and slugged it out. A fourth quarter field goal gave the Tigers a 22-19 win over the Pirates.

Southwestern took advantage of Trinity miscues early as they got on the board first on a Dylan Wilburn three yard plunge thanks to a snap over the punter's head. After falling behind 10-7, Nik Kelly lined up and receiver and snagged a pass out of the air, scampering 42 yards for six and a 13-10 lead.

The Pirates scored again in the second quarter as Justin Pelt found Taylor Stephens in the endzone from four yards out for a 19-12 lead. However, the Pirate offense was shutout in the second half.

Defensively, Southwestern got a terrific effort from Alex Lee who finished with 12 tackles, two sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss, and a forced fumble. Bobby Jones added 10 tackles while Mason Ford and Justin Broussard each had six tackles and 0.5 sacks. 

The Pirates will take a week off, but return for conference play on November 1st as they travel to Sherman, Texas to take on Austin College (4-2). 

Texas Lutheran University
Texas Lutheran (6-0) was idle this past weekend, fresh off their epic Homecoming come-from-behind win over East Texas Baptist. The Bulldogs, ranked 17th in the country by the AFCA, will play in the biggest non-conference game of the season, as they welcome in second-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor (6-0). 

Trinity University
In a wild contest, the Trinity Tigers (2-5), got their second win of the season, defeating Southwestern (1-5), 22-19 on Saturday evening.

It was a crazy first half, down 7-3, Adam Saunders stepped in front of a Justin Pelt pass and returned it 45 yards for a score and a 10-7 lead. After the Pirates took a 13-10 lead later in the quarter, Bradley Drenon blocked the extra point and Saunder scooped it up, emerging from the pile and taking it back for two points to cut the deficit to 13-12. 

Right before half, down 19-12, Mason Blaschke found Sam Harford for a 28 yard touchdown to tie the game at 19 all at half.

From there, the defenses took over, shutting each other down in the second half.

Late in the fourth quarter with the Pirates driving, Saunders intercepted his second pass of the game, returning it 38 yards to the Southwestern 36 and setting up the game winning field goal from Miguel Mendiola from 26 yards out with six minutes to go.

The Tigers will take the week off and prepare for conference play on November 1st. Trinity will hit the road and face off with Texas Lutheran (6-0) in Seguin.
