Women's Tennis Recap (Week 10) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Five of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's tennis teams competed this weekend, while the remaining two teams had their matches washed out by the rain.

Austin College posted three wins this weekend, including defeating a regionally-ranked opponent.

Centenary College took on Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University, but was blanked in both matches.

Colorado College faced off against Division II Metro State University, but couldn't come back from a doubles deficit.

Schreiner University and Trinity University had planned to compete this weekend, but inclement weather forced the cancellation of their match.

Austin College
The ‘Roos put up three wins this week, improving to 5-4 overall. They have just three matches remaining before the SCAC tournament begins. AC began the week against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, defeating the Cru 6-3. The 'Roos gained a 2-1 lead after doubles when Meghan White and Grace Ortiz avenging a loss at Line 1 Doubles from earlier in the year 8-5. AC took that lead and never looked back during singles play. White won in decisive fashion 6-2, 6-1 while Ortiz got her first win at Line 2 singles after taking the first set to a tiebreaker.  Without losing a point in the breaker, Ortiz moved on to win 7-6 (0), 6-2. Anamariia Kheveli posted a 6-2, 6-2 win over Haley Hicks.  Kheveli has faced Hicks 3 times this year, and is now 2-1 in the series after falling in straight sets to her in the fall. The following day, AC faced Southwestern Christian College, posting a 7-2 victory. Doubles play did not start out well for the 'Roos, as White and Ortiz were not able to maintain their electric start for the duration of the match, falling 8-5. It was Katie Barber that stole the show for the 'Roos, as she played her toughest opponent yet of the season and stayed white hot on the season.  Katie has yet to lose a singles match this year for the 'Roos with today's victory, 6-4, 6-2.In their last match of the week, the ‘Roos took on regionally-ranked University of Texas Dallas, defeating the Comets 6-3. Although the 'Roos were down 1-2 after doubles play, the momentum had swung back in the 'Roos favor before singles competition began. Austin College jumped out to early first set leads on four courts and narrowly missed out on a fifth when Ortiz lost 7-5 in a tiebreaker.  But Ortiz would go on to win the second set 6-3 and the super-tiebreaker for the third 11-9.  Not before her teammates would close out all of their second sets to take a 6-2 lead with one court left. Magan Green scored the first singles point for the 'Roos 6-1, 6-1 and leveled the score at 2-2.  Lide posted her best singles result of the year 6-0, 6-0 at Line 4 to put AC ahead 3-2. After winning her first set, Kheveli found herself staring down the short end of a 1-4 deficit in the second.  But her determination to cut down unforced errors lead to four straight games and six out of seven for a 6-1, 7-5 victory.  With the lead now at 4-2, Barber found herself down a break of serve late in her second set 5-6.  But in a break back situation, Barber forced a tiebreaker and took the match for the Kangaroos 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

Centenary College
The Ladies took on two SCAC opponents this week, but fell 9-0 to both Southwestern and regionally-ranked Texas Lutheran. Against SU, the Ladies picked up points from Katelyn Alexander before she fell 6-1, 6-1 in singles play. Alexander also teamed up with Katie Cornwell to add a point in doubles in an 8-1 loss at the top line. In Saturday’s match against the Bulldogs, Cornwell recorded the only points for the Ladies with a 6-0, 6-1 setback in singles play.

Colorado College
Colorado College won a pair of matches and extended a couple more to three sets Sunday against Division II Metro State, but eventually fell to the Roadrunners, 7-2, in Denver. Metro State took a 2-1 lead after the doubles matches, but CC's No. 1 duo of Mary Edman and Fiona Cerf defeated their opponent 9-7. With Cerf sitting out the singles matches due to an injury, Gillian Hyde captured CC's only singles victory by rallying for a 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(8) win at the No. 5 position. Maddie Cahill-Sanidas narrowly lost the No. 4 match, 6-7(3), 6-1, 1-0(7), while Kira Lorenzen won the first set but ended up falling at the No. 6 spot, 5-7, 7-5, 1-0(10).
