Football Recap (Week 6) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - A big comeback win for Texas Lutheran University capped Week 6 in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Texas Lutheran rallied from a 43-28 third-quarter deficit to defeat East Texas Baptist 55-49 on Homecoming night at Bulldog Stadium as sophomore sensation Marquis Barrolle rushed for 247 yards and two touchdowns.

TLU, ranked 18th in the latest AFCA Coaches' Poll, is 6-0 for the second consecutive season.

In other action involving SCAC teams, Southwestern University and Trinity University both dropped non-conference home games while Austin College was off.

Austin College
Austin College (3-2) enjoyed a bye this week, but the 'Roos will return to action this Saturday (Oct. 18) as they take on Southwestern Assemblies of God (2-3) in Waxahachie, Texas. 

Southwestern University
The Southwestern University football team was over-matched Saturday against NCAA Division II Oklahoma Panhandle State falling, 59-7, in non-conference action at Birkelbach Field.

Southwestern (1-4) did see bright spots in the second half as they were able to get on the scoreboard with 9:41 left in the game. Dylan Wilburn broke free down the sideline to rumble 36-yards for the Pirates only score of the afternoon.

It was Wilburn's second 100-yard rushing game as the sophomore finished with 105 yards on 17 carries to lead the way for Southwestern.

Oklahoma Panhandle State (4-2) outgained the Pirates posting 399 yards of total offense compared to 239 for Southwestern.

However, it was five turnovers in the game including three in the first half that all resulted in Aggie points. It helped OPSU take a 45-0 lead heading into intermission after scoring on their first three possessions in the game.

The Pirate defense was able to hold strong and build a solid second half with an interception and a fumble recovery.

Tyler Frisby led Southwestern with eight tackles while Justin Broussard finished with 4.5 tackles for a loss and one sack as the second leading tackler.

Caleb Holbrook led OPSU with 212 yards passing on 17-of-34 with two touchdowns.

Southwestern hits the road next Saturday for a non-conference matchup with Trinity. Kickoff from San Antonio is set for 6 p.m.

The Bulldogs scored touchdowns on five consecutive possessions in the second half, starting the streak with an eight-play TD drive covering 48 yards and ending it with a 12-play, 90-yard drive that took 6:25 off the clock late in the fourth.
 
ETBU led 21-7 in the second quarter and 43-28 with 1:42 to play in the third quarter.
 
Barrolle topped the 1,000-yard rushing mark in the first half and now has 1,152 yards on 171 carries with 12 TDs through six games. The school record for rushing yards in a season is 1,208, set by Royce Johnson in 1972.
 
For the game, TLU rushed 62 times for 351 yards and scored five rushing touchdowns.
 
Through the air, the Bulldogs completed 20 of 29 passes (all by White) and threw three touchdown passes. J.B. Brown joined Oliver and Baird with a TD reception. Brown's 19-yard TD catch late in the third quarter brought TLU within 35-28.
 
White finished the evening with 250 passing yards. He was intercepted twice, on tipped passes, and sacked twice. Oliver led Bulldog receivers with four catches for 71 yards and a score.
 
TLU is 6-0 for the second straight season. The Bulldogs enter the bye week with two weeks to prepare for No. 2-ranked Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Bulldogs and Cru meet at 1 p.m. on Oct. 25 at TLU's Bulldog Stadium.

Trinity University
The Trinity University Tiger football team lost a 14-7 game against the University of Chicago during Trinity's Alumni Weekend.

Trinity fell to 1-5 on the season, while Chicago remains unbeaten at 5-0 on the year. The Tigers committed three turnovers in the game, and the Maroons scored both touchdowns on turnovers. Trinity added a late touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the comeback fell short.

Chicago scored on drives of 47 yards and 13 yards late in the first quarter, starting both drives after Trinity fumbles. The Tiger defense didn't allow any drives over 38 yards after that, and gave up just 170 yards of total offense. Trinity forced seven three-and-outs in the game, and gave up just 61 yards after halftime.

Trinity scored its only touchdown with 2:28 left in the game, as Desmond King rushed for a 38-yard score to avoid a shutout.  

Quarterback Mason Blaschke led the team in rushing with 69 yards on 18 carries, as well as adding 55 yards on 8-18 passing.  King finished with 67 yards on 11 carries, and the touchdown. Chaz Davis caught three passes for 28 yards to lead all receivers.  

Three Trinity defenders finished with double digit tackles in the game, led by Connor Yorloff's 16 stops. He also had 1.5 sacks for a loss of nine yards, tying Martel Matthews for the team lead in sacks. Camden Joubert finished wtih 13 tackles for the Tigers, while Julian Turner had 12 tackles and a six-yard sack. Alejandro Anzaldua had eight tackles - 2.5 for loss, and one sack, and Brad Hood had nine stops in the game, highlighted by 3.0 tackles for loss.

Trinity will be back in action next weekend, facing off against Southwestern University in a non-conference matchup. The Tigers and Pirates meet in Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action in Georgetown, Texas, on November 8.
