Austin's Ross, TLU's Dowling, Brandenburg Named SCAC Football Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Junior running back Madison Ross of Austin College, junior defensive back Drake Dowling and senior kick Tyler Brandenburg of Texas Lutheran University were named players of the week for their effort in week nine of the SCAC Football season.

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games played Saturday, November 1st

MADISON ROSS OF AUSTIN COLLEGE, a 5-9, 188-pound junior running back from Fort Worth, Texas, has been named the SCAC Football Offensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, November 1st.  

Ross led a potent 'Roos ground attack on Saturday, picking up the team's first conference win of the season in a 47-29 victory over Southwestern.

Ross led an Austin College offense that piled up 316 rushing yards, averaging 8.2 yards per carry and setting a new career high with 189 yards and three touchdowns in the big win.

For the season, Ross is second in the SCAC with 779 yards rushing, 97.4 yards per game, and seven touchdowns on the season. He is also the leader in yards per carry at 6.2.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore quarterback Bryan Hicks of Southwestern finished 25-for-38 with 334 yards passing and two touchdowns in a 47-29 loss to Austin College to open conference play. Junior quarterback Trenton White of Texas Lutheran guided an offensive attack that put up 34 points and 482 yards of total offense. White threw for 294 and three scores and rushed for a career-best 75 yards on nine carries. White was 26-for-36 through the air and hit seven different receivers. Senior quarterback Mason Blaschke of Trinity contributed in every way possible during the game, leading the Tigers in rushing, receiving, and passing yards and getting a touchdown in all three categories.

 

SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

DRAKE DOWLING OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY, a 5-8, 183-pound junior defensive back from Katy, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Defensive Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, November 1st.

Dowling led the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs to their first confernece win of the season, holding off Trinity 34-27 on Saturday afternoon in Seguin.

Dowling led the defense with 10 tackles on the afternoon. He also came away with an interception in the fourth quarter while holding the Trinity passing offense to only 154 yards. 

For the season, Dowling is tied for first in the conference with five interceptions on the season, amassing 80 yards in return yards. He is also sixth in the SCAC with 62 tackles, which is second on the team.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior defensive lineman Brett H. Vaugh of Austin College led an Austin College defensive front that dominated at the line of scrimmage, as the junior defensive tackle made four tackles, including three solo stops, and registered 2.0 of the team's seven sacks for a loss of 13 yards in a big win over Southwestern. Sophomore defensive back Brad Hood of Trinity led the Trinity defense in a 34-27 loss at Texas Lutheran. Hood finished with nine tackles (four solo) and a tackle for loss. He also had a pass breakup and a quarterback hurry on the afternoon. For the season, Hood has 2.5 sacks and 7.5 tackles for loss. His 55 tackles ranked fourth on the Tiger defense. Southwestern did not nominate anyone.

 

SCAC SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK

TYLER BRANDENBURG OF TEXAS LUTHERAN UNIVERSITY,
 a 6-2, 210-pound senior kicker from Spring, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Football Special Teams Player-of-the-Week for games played Saturday, November 1st.

Brandenburg was huge in the special teams part of the game as the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs picked up their first conference win, defeating Trinty 34-27 in Seguin.

Brandenburg connected on field goals of 42 and 39 yards in the win over Trinity. Brandenburg matched his career-long FG with the 42-yarder. He now has 12 field goals made in 2014 to match the 12 he made in 2013. Brandenburg was also 4-for-4 on PATs and averaged 57 yards on kickoffs, with a net of 44.0, and one touchback.

For the season, Brandenburg's 12 field goals lead the conference. He also leads the conference in field goal percentage at 75% and has now kicked the longest field goal of the season with his 42 yarder. Brandenburg is 40-for-43 in extra points this season with 76 points.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore defensive lineman Wesley Thompson of Austin College made the biggest special teams play of the day for Austin College, blocking a point after attempt as Southwestern looked to tie the game in the second quarter, before the 'Roos started to pull away following his momentum changing block. Senior wide receiver/specialist Matthew Kennemer of Trinty had four punts for a 42.0 average including a 63 yard punt and also converted a pass on a fake punt for 31 yards to set up the Tigers opening score to give them the lead early in the game. Southwestern did not nominate anyone.
