LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Centenary College Gents opened the season with a 5-3 win over East Texas Baptist University, the first win for new head coach Emmett Rutkowski. This is the team's first season-opening win since the 2010 season. The Gents' Friday evening match against LeTourneau University was postponed due to inclement weather.
Schreiner opened the season with a win, the Mountaineers first season-opening win since the 2006 season.
The fifth-ranked Trinity University Tigers opened the season with wins against the College of St. Scholastica and Washington University. Trinity has now won 13 of its last 15 season-openers under head coach Paul McGinlay.
Austin College
The 'Roos opened up the 2014 season with a scoreless double-overtime draw against East Texas Baptist University on Sunday Afternoon. The Tigers outshot the 'Roos 24-10 in the game, marking ten shots-on-goal, but Andrew Celio recorded all 10 saves to earn the shutout.
Centenary College
Four Gents scored in the 5-3 defeat of East Texas Baptist University Saturday, giving the team their first win of the season. Ivann Amaya recorded two goals, his first coming in the 18th minute from Jason Aiken. Amaya added his second in the 84th minute as insurance for the win. Aiken scored one of his own, just three minutes after the first. In the 24th minute, Kellan Klaus extended the lead to 3-0. ETBU answered back with a hat trick with goals in the 49th, 57th, and 64th minutes, but Hunter Paul put the Gents back on top in the 71st minute off Aiken's second assist.
Colorado College
Colorado College hosted the visiting Tigers from Occidental College Friday night, but the visiting Tigers were able to convert three shots and went home with a 3-2 victory. Freshman midfielder Tim Huettel put CC up 1-0 in the 17th minute, but Oxy answered the goal later in the first period. Senior forward Stuart Beezley scored the second goal to tie the game back up after Oxy took the lead with just seconds remaining in the first half. Oxy's final score came in the last 20 minutes of the game, giving them the win. Sunday, the Tigers took down Mary Hardin-Baylor 2-0 for their first win of the season. Freshman Theo Hooker recorded his first career shoutout and victory and junior Max Grossenbacher recorded his first game winner. Grossenbacher scored in the fifth minute for the only goal that the Tigers needed. Senior Andrew Worthington doubled Colorado College's advantage when he buried a header off a corner kick.
Dallas
The Crusaders opened up the season at home with wins over Concordia University and Southwestern University (Kan.). On Friday, the team took down Concordia 1-0, coming off of a goal by junior forward Colton Allen in the 16th minute. Allen finished the game with six shots and senior midfielder Nathan Nwaeze added five of his own. Two days later, the Crusaders defeated Southwestern (Kan.) 3-0. Allen recorded another goal in the game, his second of the season, while Matthew Wise and Ben Mannings each added their first. Goalkeepers P.J. Hasson and Tino Gamueda teamed up to record seven saves on the day, each playing 45 minutes.
Schreiner
The Mountaineers opened the 2014 season with a 2-0 win against Howard Payne University. The game remained scoreless through the first period, but an own goal by HPU put the Mountaineers on the board. Sophomore Manny Losoya got an insurance goal for the team in the 82nd minute, earning Ryan Hernandez his first assist of the year. Junior Scott Teitelman had four saves in the game, earning a shutout.
Southwestern
In the first match-up of the season, the Pirates fell to Washington University 2-0. A penalty kick in the 12th minute gave WU the lead and another goal in the 18th minute put them out of reach. The Pirates outshot WU 15-13, but couldn't get to the back of the net. The Pirates fell again the next night to the College of St. Scholastica 4-0. St. Scholastica recorded 22 shots, 11 on goal, leading to their win. Travis Carmichael recorded four of the Pirates seven saves in the game, while Andrew Carreno-Mende got five shots off.
Texas Lutheran
The Bulldogs began the season at home with a 3-0 win against Howard Payne University on Saturday afternoon. The team received goals from Isaac Lopez, Tim Schaffer and Alejandro Martinez, all three of which were in the game's first 47 minutes. The TLU defense held HPU without a shot for the first 82 minutes, before senior Ian Parker came in to finish the final minutes at goalkeeper, recording four saves in the last few minutes. Monday, the Bulldogs fought Concordia University, but fell 3-2 in double overtime. Freshman David Ching gave TLU their first goal of the day, after going down 1-0 in the eighth minute. Nathan Drouillard had the assist on Ching's goal, and added a goal of his own in the 79th minute.
Trinity
The fifth-ranked Tigers took home two wins this weekend, beating out the College of St. Scholastic on Friday afternoon 3-1 and edging out No. 7 Washington University 1-0 on Sunday evening. Victor Araujo opened scoring for the Tigers, converting a penalty shot in the 11th minute. The rest of the game's points came within the first eight minutes of the second half. Freshman Brent Mandelkorn sent in the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute, just before Dylan Blumberg headed in an insurance goal in the 53rd minute. Less than 30 seconds later, St. Scholastica converted a penalty kick, but couldn't come back from a 3-1 deficit later in the game. Sunday night, the Tigers earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over #24 Washington University. Senior Matt Cardone earned the victory in goal, recording five saves to record his 22nd career shutout. Freshman Brent Mandelkorn scored the game's only goal, connecting in the 14th minute.
