Colorado's Ogilvie Named CoSIDA Academic All-American

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - For the second year in a row, Brandon Ogilvie of the Colorado College men's soccer team earned national recognition for his combined performance in the classroom and on the pitch.

Ogilvie was named to the 2014 Capital One Division III Academic All-America Team, the nation's most prestigious academic award for student-athletes.

The senior forward is one of 33 men's soccer players nationwide to earn the highly-competitive honor. He was among 12 voted to the third team by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Ogilvie, who owns a 3.53 grade-point average as a biochemistry major, earned second-team Scholar All-America honors from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America after the 2013 season.

In addition to his work in the classroom, he also served as a research assistant with a pair of his mentors.

Working alongside Murphy Brasuel, associate professor in the school's Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Ogilvie researched synthesis and application of carbon based quantum dots as real-time pH sensors for living organisms.

While interning with Dr. Steven Myers, an orthopedic surgeon in Colorado Springs, Ogilvie studied the efficacy of various blood loss reduction techniques in the operating room, specifically with hip replacement surgeries.

"Brandon was an expert at balancing his athletic and academic responsibilities in a very difficult area of studies," head coach Horst Richardson said of the program's seventh Academic All-American. "Brandon is an extraordinary student-athlete who exemplifies the best of the liberal arts."

The fifth-year senior from Manchester Center, Vt., was instrumental in leading the Tigers to a 15-4-2 record, their most since the 2004 squad posted a 16-4-1 record. CC was nationally ranked for most of the season, peaking at No. 14 in the NSCAA's Top 25 on Oct. 7 and Oct. 14. CC was No. 22 in the latest D3Soccer.com poll.

Despite playing four of the last five games with a fractured leg, Ogilvie earned first-team all-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference honors for the second time. He finished in a tie for the conference lead with four game winners, was second with 11 goals and tied for second with 24 points.

The fifth-year senior is one of only 14 players in Colorado College history to record 10 or more goals in back-to-back years. He completed his career tied for 13th with 31 career goals and tied for 17th with 72 points.

"The sacrifice he made to come back as a super senior, to be with his team, to help the team and to play injured for the team, speaks volumes about Brandon," Richardson said.

After graduating next month, Ogilvie plans to complete his certification as an emergency medical technician (EMT) in the hope of serving the community on an ambulance crew before enrolling in med school in the fall of 2016.
