LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Though weather had not completely cleared out in the Texas area, all seven SCAC teams were able to play multiple games this past weekend and get their seasons back on track with conference play only a week out.
Austin College
The 'Roos dropped a pair of non-conference contest to the Centenary Gents in Shreveport this past weekend. In game one, nothing could go right for the 'Roos as they dropped a 15-2 game in seven innings. The Gents plated a run in the first before putting four runs across in the second. The 'Roos plated a run in the top of the third when Jeremy Halford came home, but Centenary added 10 more runs over the next three innings to surge ahead 15-1. The 'Roos scored one more run in the top of the seventh on an RBI single by Thomas Oberg to make it a 15-2 final. Game two would be a different story, as the Gents took a 2-0 win. Mychael Parish surrendered two runs on eight hits in 7.2 innings of work to absorb the loss. James Arguello finished 3-for-4 with a double to lead the 'Roos on offense. The 'Roos were scheduled to play two more games against the Gents, but they were called due to weather. The 'Roos are now 2-4 on the season with more more games cancelled (7) than played (6). Austin College returns to the diamond on Tuesday as they take on Dallas Christian and will will open up conference play this weekend, on the road, as they take on Texas Lutheran in Seguin.
Centenary College
The Gents earned a pair of wins this weekend over Austin College in non-conference action by score of 15-2 (7) and 2-0. Michael Schmipf posted two multiple-hit performances in the twinbill – going 4-for-7 at the dish with a pair of RBI and a run scored. The biggest knock came in the bottom of the eighth in the second outing as he drove in Dakota Brown, who led off the inning with a double. The RBI provided the insurance run the Maroon and White needed to ice the win. Jake McFarland (1-0) picked up the win on the mound in the second affair, tossing 6.1 innings allowing seven hits along with a strikeout. Taylor Henry logged his first save of the season tossing the final 1.2 frames with five strikeouts and two hits. Devin Bench combined in the shutout effort with an inning of work with a pair of strikeouts and two walks. Holden Novak (3-0) tossed 5.2 innings in the win. Novak allowed a run on four hits with six strikeouts. Trey Guccione tossed the final 1.1 innings with a run allowed on three hits with a walk. Brooks Williams, Cole Lavergne, and Christian Sebastian each had two RBI. The Gents move to 4-6 on the season and will now open up SCAC play, traveling to San Antonio to take on 16th-ranked Trinity in a three game series.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders were swept by East Texas Baptist this past weekend. In game one, in an 11-5 loss to East Texas Baptist, Alex Stack and Luciano Villanueva each tallied multiple hit efforts at the dish. Stack extended his multi-hit performances to six, and Villanueva ripped one of the team's two doubles in the game. Vargas Jr. notched the other extra base knock for the short stops only hit. He also drove a run in. The following day, Dallas dropped the final two games of the doubleheaders, 2-1 (7) and 15-5 (7). On the bump for Dallas in game one was Ryan Hammonds who got saddled with the loss in a solid effort. Hammonds (1-3) fanned seven opponent hitters while allowing one free pass. He gave up two runs on six hits, with his demise occurring in the bottom of the fifth. Nolan Kipp had the lone RBI. In game two, Trevor Keele (Edgewood, Texas) was productive with a game-high three hits, and scored two runs while Villanueva smacked his first homer of the season, a three run shot in the sixth, finishing with a combined five RBIs in the series. The Crusaders fall to 4-9 on the season. They have a busy week ahead of them, beginning with a doubleheader against Howard Payne on Tuesday followed by a matchup with LeTourneau on Wednesday. They will then open up conference play this weekend, traveling to Kerrville to take on Schreiner.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers earned a 4-1 win over Cardinal Stritch and were then swept this past weekend in a three game series by 16th-ranked Trinity. Charlie Stewart went five innings, allowing just one hit while striking out five to earn the 4-1 win over Cardinal Stritch. Ryan Martin came in and was sound in relief, going the final two innings and only allowing one run on three hits.A 4-1 loss in game one saw Jayme Kidder (1-2) give yet another terrific performance. He took the loss but went seven innings, scattering eight hits and giving up three earned runs to the potent Tiger attack. In the second game, Schreiner opened up with a 2-0 lead, but the Tigers responded with five runs and held on for a 5-3 victory. Hayden Ray earned a no decision as he returned to his early-season form and pitched very well in five innings of work. He had to come out early as a precautionary measure, but allowed just five hits and two earned runs in his successful outing. Connor Ver Schurr, Sam Pistrui, and Kidder each had two hits in the game. Sunday was a strange game as the Mountaineers were no hit despite scoring two runs in a 10-2 loss. Stewart continued his transition from closer to starter, going five plus innings and allowing just two earned runs. Unfortunately, the defense wasn't as solid, leading to numerous infield errors and five unearned runs. Junior Ryan Martin pitched well again in relief, going the last two innings without allowing a run. The Mountaineers move to 3-12 on the year and will prepare to start conference play as they welcome in Dallas this upcoming weekend.
Southwestern University
The Pirates dropped two out of three to Texas Lutheran this past weekend in non-conference action. Game on was a wild one, going 12 innings as the Bulldogs eventually earned a 12-7 win. the Pirates scored five runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-5 lead, but TLU got one back in the ninth to square it back up. Both teams scored in the 10th, but the Bulldogs took advantage of Pirate errors to explode for five runs in the 12th and take the win. Will Cates, Ben Little and Robert Wehman all posted two hits while Wehman led with three RBIs. Jeremy Rice went seven innings, allowing five runs, four earned on seven hits while walking one and striking out four. The following day, the Pirates earned a 5-3 win before dropping the rubber match 7-1. Clayton Haag picked up his first win of the season in relief of starter Jacob Kendra with Riley Wayland earning the save. Ben Little went 2-for-3 with two RBIs while Wehman and Chase Allen added two hits and a RBI each. In the final game, Jason McCormick had the lone RBI in the third as the Pirates could not solve Thomas Harwell. The Pirates dropped a contest to Cardinal Stritch earlier in the week, 5-2. Southwestern is now 5-6 on the season and will take on Mary Hardin-Baylor on Tuesday. The Pirates will then head to Tucson, Ariz. to play in the Tucson Invitaitonal as they will battle Cal Lutheran and St. Thomas (MN).
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs went 3-1 this past weekend, earning an 11-4 win over DeSales before taking two out of three over Southwestern in non-conference play. In the battle of Bulldogs, Texas Lutheran was terrific offensively as they pounded out 16 hits. Tony Gennusa finished 4-for-5 with three doubles, a triple, and three RBIs to go with two runs scored. Holden Bryant added a 1-for-3 day while Zach Jacobs was 3-for-4 with a RBI and two runs scored. Lincoln Baylor earned the win in relief, going 3.1 innings and allowing one hit. The Bulldogs took a wild 12-7 (12) contest, earning a run in the ninth to force extras and scoring five in the 12th for the win. Gennusa was terrific again, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and three RBIs while Keaton Bohrmann was 3-for-7 with a RBI and three runs scored. The Bulldogs would drop the second game, 5-3, despite a two RBI day from Austin Frick. However, Thomas Harwell pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and no walks and striking out 15 to lead the Bulldogs to the series win, 7-1. Justin Law finished the game going 3-for-5 with four RBIs while Ke. Bohrmann had another three hit game. Bryant was also 3-for-3. Texas Lutheran is now 11-6 on the season and will open up confernece play next weekend as they welcome in Austin College.
#16 Trinity University
The 16th-ranked Tiger baseball team went 4-0 over the weekend, earning mid-week win over DeSales followed by a non-conference sweep of Schreiner. Zack Speer earned his third win of the season while Matt Tindall earned his second save as Trinity defeated the Bulldogs, 4-3. Colin Serkowski, Jeremy Wolf, Austin Singer, and George Haaland all had RBIs as Trinity was limited to only four hits to DeSales 10. Against Schreiner, Trinity took game one, 4-1. Trent Rape went the distance, earning a complete game, allowing no earned runs, and striking out six. Serkowski finished the day going 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs. Trinity earned a 5-3 win in game two as Carter McEachren finished the day going 2-for-4 with twos RBIs while Drew Butler had a pair of hits and a RBI. Nick Griffith earned the win in relief, allowing no runs and no hits in 1.2 innings of work. Tindall earned his third save of the season. Trinity earned the sweep on Sunday as Ryan Gray, Chris Tate, Troy Nelson, and Robbie Kellerman combined to throw a no hitter, despite allowing two runs and walking 12. Jose Santos led the way offensively, going 1-for-2 with a homerun, three RBIs, and two runs scored. Parker Cormack finished 2-for-2 with a RBI. Trinity returns to action on Tuesday, taking on Our Lady of the Lake, and will then open up conference play at home as they battle Centenary.
