Women's Track & Field Recap (Week 5) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All five of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s track & field teams were in action last week.

Colorado College traveled to Hays, Kansas to compete in the Alex Francis Classic, while the University of Dallas headed to Oklahoma to compete in the Oklahoma Baptist University Invitational.

Trinity University hosted the Trinity Tiger Invite this weekend, with Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran both in attendance.

Colorado College
The Colorado College women's track and field team took sixth place at the 2015 Alex Francis Classic in Hays, Kansas. In Friday’s events, Rebecca Lavietes took home first place in the 5K with a personal-best time of 18 minutes, 15.18 seconds. Katie Sandfort finished fifth in the race and broke the 19-minute barrier for the first time with an 18:52.11. The Tigers captured five of the top 12 spots in the 800-meter race, led by Stefani Messick, who finished second with a personal-best time of 2:28.24. Duranya Freeman finished fourth with a 2:29.38, followed by Beryl Coulter (6th), Kathryn Walsh (9th) and Ayla Loper (12th). Leah Wessler led the Tigers with a second-place finish in the 1,500-meter event, breaking the five-minute mark for the first time with a 4:56.77. Patty Atkinson placed fourth with a time of 5:11.61 and Allie Crimmins was sixth at 5:16.82. Corey Luna and Abigail Philbrick finished 8th and 12th, respectively. Ellie Swanson finished fifth in the 400 meters to lead Colorado College on Day 2 of the meet, crossing the line in a personal-record time of 1:03.46, which was just 1.09 seconds out of third place. Swanson also finished 14th in the 200 meters sprint with a clocking of 28.22. CC's other top effort was turned in by Samantha Gilbert, who took 12th in the 100 meters with a time of 13.19.

University of Dallas
The University of Dallas team competed in the Oklahoma Baptist University (OBU) Invitational this past Saturday. Emma Polefko claimed a personal record (PR) on the 1500 Meter relay with a 5:30.12 score. Elizabeth Hinchley totaled a 5:41.79 to finish with a solid time. Other PR's were notched on the 400 Hurdles by Lizzie Depew (Grove City, Pa.) and Sarah Valdovinos with a 1:13.09 and 1:19.26, respectively. Making her season debut, Meghan Falconer posted a time of 12:52 minutes in the Steeplechase. Participants for the Lady Crusaders in the 4X100 Meter Relay increased their season PR with a 54.96 mark. The quartet included: Michelle DeRoche, Depew, Katie Mcintyre and freshman Helen Onyenso.

Southwestern University
The Pirates traveled to Trinity this weekend to compete in the Trinity Invitational, taking sixth place on the women’s side. Sara Cowan got the first points for the Pirates in the 400 meter hurdles, finishing in sixth place with a time of 1:12.54. She then joined teammates Colleen Nair, Brianna Timourian and Noorie Han in the 4x100 meter relay to take third place with a time of 1:02.59. In the 4x400 relay, Cowan, Timourian and Nair teamed up with Zainab Oketokoun took sixth with a time of 4:45.85. In field events, Han took seventh place in the triple jump with a mark of 9.20 meters before Kimi Prevost followed her up with a sixth place finish in the shot put with a throw of 9.66 meters. Anna Hugel took 10th in the discus (28.91 meters) and Prevost came in 13th (25.93 meters). Maya Adighibe took sixth in the hammer throw and finished first among SCAC competitors in the even with a throw of 34.65 meters.

Texas Lutheran University
The TLU women competed in the Trinity Invitational this weekend, taking second among the six team field with 108 points. Brittany Steubing got the first points on the board for the Bulldogs with a second place finish in the 100 meter dash, marking a time of 12.69 seconds. Teammates Cori Picazo and Morgan Lacy took sixth and seventh, respectively. Sandra Henderson opned up her day with a sixth place finish in the 200 meter dash, 27.56, finishing less than a tenth of a second ahead of Sarah Randall. In the 400 meter dash, Haley Cortez too seventh with a time of 1:02.74. Cortez finished just behind teammate Ranecia Faison in the 100 meter hurdles and took fourth in the 400 meter event. Faison led TLU with a time of 16.57 seconds, while Cortez came in at 17.36 in the 100 and 1:10.25 in the 400. Henderson, Randall, Cortez and Faison teamed up in the 4x400 relay, taking third with a time of 4:05.92. In field events, Picazo took third in the pole vault with a mark of 2.90 meters and tied with Marlena Hunt for sixth in the long jump with a distance of 4.86 meters. Hunt took the edge in the triple jump, marking a distance of 10.48 meters while Picazo came in at 10.34 meters. In the shot put, Meredith Berger took fourth place with a throw of 10.78 meters, followed by Brielle Brown in seventh, 8.88 meters. Brown took fourth in the discus with a toss of 38.53 meters while teammate Haley Lasseter took seventh with a throw of 36.80 meters. Berger and Lasseter took the top two spots in the javelin throw with marks of 30.94 and 28.36 meters, respectively.

Trinity University
The Tigers played host to the Trinity Invitational this weekend, earning the top spot in the competition. TU got things started early, taking the top spot in the first two events as Nkolika Nweke won the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.39 seconds and Bailey Drury took top spot in the 200 meter dash at 26.13 seconds.  In the 100 meter dash, Elizabeth Peters took third for the Tigers and Abigail Sheppard finished ninth. Katie Groke took fourth in the 200 meter dash behind Drury. Drury took second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 58.63 seconds and Groke finished fourth in this event as well with a time of 59.65. In the 800 meter run, Mariana Sigala took the top spot with a time of 2:19.70. In the distance events, Natalie Belew and Haley McFadden finished first and second with times of 40:30.61 and 40:31.07. Sarah Thornton took sixth in the 100 meter hurdles and fifth in the 400 meter event. The Tigers took the top spot in the 4x100 meter relay and second in the 4x400 relay to finish out the track events. In the field events, Sarah Pickett got things started with a top finish in the high jump, marking a height of 1.58 meters, while Heather Haves and Leah Wildman took third and fourth. Britney Sullivan took third in the long jump with a mark of 5.46 meters and first in the triple jump at 11.80 meters. Faith Deckard marked a distance of 10.87 meters in the shot put to take third place.
