LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - The Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference named Diego Trevino of Trinity Univeristy and Bernice Leonard of Southwestern University as the men's and women's Golfers of the Week for tournament played through Tuesday, October 21.
MEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
DIEGO TREVINO
OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore from The
Woodlands, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Golfer of the
Week for tournaments played through Tuesday, October 21.
Trevino finished in third place as he led the
Trinity University men's golf team to a three-shot victory in the
Tigers' home tournament this week at the Alamo City
Classic.
The sophomore shot rounds of 72 and 70 for a two-day total of even
par 142. Trinity finished ahead of Concordia (Texas),
Hardin-Simmons and No. 11 Texas Lutheran University.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior Jamie Gibson
of Centenary fired rounds of 74 and 74 to finish at 148 and
in a tie with teammate Hank Strickler atop the individual
leaderboard at the University of Arkansas-Monticello Fall Classic
tournament. The duo led the Gents to the team title (611) in the
seven team event, defeating second-place Southern Arkansas
University by four strokes. Gibson took medalist honors after
defeating Strickler in a three hole sudden death playoff.
Sophomore Tyler Kolb of
Texas Lutheran fired a team-low round of 71 on Tuesday to
finish in a tie for fifth (with teammate Adam Peterson) among
individuals. Both finished with a two-round score of 146 (+4) as
the Bulldogs finished fifth at the Alamo City Classic. Freshman Chris Eckes of the
University of Dallas, bested a personal and team-low on
Sunday as he fired a 70 in the final round of the Hendrix College
Dual contested at the Conway Country Club. Eckes' huge second round
helped the rookie compile a two-day total of 153, as he placed
second overall.
WOMEN'S GOLFER OF THE WEEK
BERNICE
LEONARD OF SOUTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY, a junior from
Bellaire, Texas, has been named the SCAC Women’s Golfer of
the Week for tournaments played through Tuesday, October 21.
Leonard led the Southwestern women’s golf
team to a third-place finish of 10 teams competing at the Alamo City Classic, contested Oct. 20-21 at
The Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio.
Leonard fired rounds of 75 and 76 for a
two-day total of 151 (+9), placing her second among the 47
competitors.
Southwestern completed the tournament with a 641 total at the
par-71 course to finish in a tie for third. Among fellow SCAC
competitors, the Pirates were two shots behind Schreiner University
(639) and eight shots ahead of host Trinity University (649). Texas
Lutheran finished ninth at 752.
Other outstanding
performances in the SCAC:
Senior Melanie Dean
of Schreiner had a career best performance in scoring
and final finish in leading the Mountaineers' women’s golf
team to a runner-up finish at the Alamo City Classic. Schreiner was
the top D-III team in the final standings and defeated both #4 Mary
Hardin-Baylor and #16 Trinity in the nine team field. Dean shot
78-77 which is her collegiate low round and 36-hole total and
earned her first top-five finish as well. Junior Brigette Lee of
Trinity led the Trinity women at the Alamo City Classic
by firing a two-day total of 160 - tying her for eighth among the
47 competitors. Junior
Gabby Rangel of Texas Lutheran shots rounds of 84 and
92 and finished tied for 32nd with a final score of 176 (+34) at
the Alamo City Classic.
