Trinity's Lawson; Colorado College's Hooker, Worthington highlight 2014 All-SCAC Men's Soccer Team

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – In exclusive voting by the league's head men's soccer coaches, Johnny Lawson of Trinity University was selected SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year and Andrew Worthington of Colorado College was voted SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year. Complete Release

In that same balloting, Theo Hooker of Colorado College was named SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year and his head coach, Horst Richardson, was voted SCAC Coach-of-the-Year.

Johnny Lawson, a senior forward from San Antonio, Texas, leads the SCAC with 17 goals and 42 points and is second in assists with eight heading into this weekend's NCAA Tournament. His 17 goals are the most in a single-season for a SCAC men's player since 2007. Lawson finished with a goal in each of Trinity's tournament wins – including the all-important equalizer in Sunday's title game – in earning his second career SCAC Tournament Offensive MVP award (2012). A two-time Offensive Player-of-the-Week (Week 4, Week 9) this season and a two-time All-SCAC First Team selection, Lawson is the eighth Trinity player to receive SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year honors since the award's inception in 2003.

Lawson received five votes from the coaches in the SCAC Offensive Player-of-the-Year balloting. Southwestern University sophomore forward Andres Carreno-Mendez received two votes and Colorado College senior forward Brandon Ogilvie received the remaining vote.

Andrew Worthington, a senior defender from Hinsdale, Ill., anchored a Colorado College defense that had 11 shutouts and the second-lowest goals against average during the regular season en route to a second-place regular season and SCAC tournament finish. A two-year captain and heartbeat of the team, Worthington was an extension of the coaching staff on the field. In addition to being a two-time SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Week (Week 2, Week 9) the senior also contributed offensively, chipping in with two goals from set pieces. A two-time All-SCAC First Team selection, Worthington is the second Colorado College player to receive SCAC Defensive Player-of-the-Year honors – following former teammate Nick Lammers in 2012.

Worthington received five votes in the SCAC Defensive POTY balloting. Junior defender Tom Carwile of Trinity received two votes and junior goalkeeper Jonathan Michael of Texas Lutheran University earned the remaining first-place vote.

Theo Hooker, a first-year goalkeeper from Denver, Colo., established himself as the Tigers' top goalkeeper early in the season and never looked back. The freshman net-minder led the league during the regular season in goals-against-average and still sits atop the conference with a GAA of 0.54. An excellent shot stopper who distributes well with both his hands and feet, Hooker currently leads the league in shutouts with nine and is third in save percentage at .827. He is the second consecutive Colorado College player to earn SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors and third overall. Current teammate Caden MacKenzie was Co-Newcomer-of-the-Year last season and Matt Fechter won the award in 2009.

Hooker received five votes in earning SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors, followed by first-year defender Dylan Blumberg of Trinity with two votes. First-year midfielder Christian Lopez of Southwestern received the remaining first-place vote.

Colorado College head coach Horst Richardson guided his Tigers to a 15-4-2 mark, a second-place regular season finish in the SCAC and the championship match of the 2014 conference tournament where they dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to Trinity. This year's squad was nationally ranked by the NSCAA for much of the season, peaking at 14th on Oct. 7 and Oct. 14. Since taking control of the Colorado College program in 1966, Richardson has compiled a record of 567 victories, 304 defeats and 71 ties (.640 winning percentage) and is the currently ranked second among all active Division III men's soccer coaches for career victories. He has taken the Tigers to the NCAA playoffs 19 times and has earned NCAA regional coach-of-the-year honors four times. In this, his team's eighth year as a member of the SCAC, this is Richardson's second COTY honor.

Richardson received five votes from his peers in the COTY voting while Paul McGinlay of Trinity, Emmett Rutkowski of Centenary College and  Eddie Salazar of Texas Lutheran all received one vote each.
