NORMAN, Okla. – Eight men’s golfers from the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference received Division III PING All-Region honors from the Golf Coaches Association of America Tuesday. Full Release
The West region had 24 total honorees, nine more than any other region, and one third of those coming from four different SCAC institutions.
Schreiner University notched three of the spots, with seniors Jimmy Keener and Cheyne Kendall and sophomore Matt McClung earning the honors. At the SCAC Men’s Golf Championship, Keener tied for third, while Kendall and McClung finished in a tie for fifth place. All three are averaging a round score just over 73.
Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University each placed two golfers on the All-Region team. SCAC Newcomer of the Year Sutherland Stith earned the honors, joined by teammate Jordan Cowart. Stith posted four top 10 finishes this year and shot an average of 75.65 per round. Cowart is shooting an average of 74.65 this season, earning four top five finishes against region opponents, including a first place regional finish at the Gordin Classic.
SCAC Golfer of the Year, Adam Peterson, earned the recognition along with teammate Kraig Zimmerhanzel. Peterson currently owns the fourth lowest scoring average in the country, 72.27 and leads the country with 94 total birdies. He posted four consecutive tournament wins in the spring, leading up to his selection as an individual competitor at the 2015 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship. Zimmerhanzel is averaging a score of 75.05 per round this year, while totaling two eagles and 58 birdies. He earned All-SCAC Second Team honors after finishing ninth in the SCAC Championship.
Trinity University’s Diego Trevino rounded out the list of SCAC honorees. Trevino is tied for 55th in the nation in average round score, 74.48, and has totaled 54 birdies in his first year with the Tigers. He finished in 11th place at the SCAC Championship, earning All-SCAC Second Team honors as he helped to lead Trinity to a runner-up finish behind Schreiner.
Schreiner and Southwestern are currently competing at the NCAA Division III Men’s Golf Championship, joined by Adam Peterson of Texas Lutheran. The competition concludes Friday, May 15 in Greensboro, N.C.
