Women's Tennis Recap (Week 5) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All seven of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams competed this weekend.

Austin College earned the first win of the season over University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, but fell in a close match to Southwestern University.

Centenary College took on Schreiner University, while the Mountaineers also faced University of Texas-Tyler, East Texas Baptist University and Louisiana State University-Shreveport. Colorado College hosted NCAA Division I Portland State this weekend.

Texas Lutheran University took on the University of Texas at Dallas, while Trinity University traveled to the West Coast to face the California Institute of Technology.

 

Austin College
The ‘Roos began their Saturday against Southwestern University, but fell 6-3. AC got out to a slow start, dropping all three doubles matches. Kate Willis earned a 6-3-, 6-3 win at No. 2 singles, while Grace Ortiz took The No. 3 spot 6-4, 6-4. At No. 1 singles, it took Meghan White nearly four hours to earn her win over Julie Swets of SU, but in the end she earned the ‘Roos third and final point of the day with a 6-7 (0-4), 6-4, 6-3 win. The ‘Roos faced UMHB later in the day, defeating the Crusaders in an exciting 5-4 match. Carlye Lide and Willis were able to win a decisive 8-3 match in No. 2, while Ortiz and White were unable to keep a grip on two breaks of serve, falling 8-5 in the No. 1 spot.  Doubles play concluded with AC down 2-1. In singles action, UMHB took the No. 1 spot after a tiebreaker, 3-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-5). Willis faced a tie breaker herself in No. 2 singles, 6-0, 1-6, 1-0 (11-9), but earned the win. Ortiz took the No. 3 spot in straight sets, as did Anamariia Kheveli at No. 4. Lide got the ‘Roos final singles victory of the day, 6-2, 6-7 (2-7), 1-0 (10-4).

Centenary College
The Ladies took on Schreiner this weekend in their lone contest, while their other scheduled match against LSU-Shreveport was cancelled. Against the Mountaineers, the Ladies fell 8-1. Their lone victory came in the No. 3 singles position as Katelyn Alexander grabbed a 6-4, 6-1 win. Centenary received strong efforts from the top five singles slots especially from the No. 2 slot as Katie Cornwell battled Kelsey Buczkowski before falling 6-4, 6-2. Laura Beurlot fell 6-2, 6-1 in the top singles position with Shelby Ferguson at No.4 falling 6-1, 6-4 and Celia Sobleman rounding out the group at No. 5 with a 6-3, 6-2 setback.

Colorado College
The Tigers took on Division I Portland State this weekend, but fell 9-0. The Vikings posted straight-set victories in five of the six singles matches, while Fiona Cerf forced a tiebreaker in the No. 1 spot. Cerf fell 4-6, 6-4, 1-0 (3) after her opponent rallied back for the win. In No. 2 singles, Mary Edman fell 6-2, 6-1, while Maggie Harwood put up similar numbers in the No. 4 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Edman and Cerf teamed up for No. 1 singles, but fell 6-2.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers played four matches over the weekend, putting together a 3-1 record. Friday, the team played UT-Tyler and East Texas Baptist, splitting the matches. The morning match against UTT ended in an 8-1 loss for SU, but they bounced back for a 601 win over ETBU that evening. In the morning, SU had chances at No. 3 doubles where the team of Brooke Ohlman and Alex Wheeler lost, 8-5.  UTT got decisive wins at No. 1 and No. 3 singles to clinch the match but Abby Knedlik was a bright spot for the Mountaineers, recording a 7-6 (2), 2-6, (10-6) win at No. 6 singles and Katie Watts nearly did the same, falling 6-2, 3-6, (10-8) at No. 5. Later that afternoon, it would be the Mountaineers in control as the No. 2 doubles tandem of Karyn Swink and Knedlik and the No. 3 team of Wheeler and Ohlman each won to power SU to a 2-1 lead entering singles.  Swink (No. 3), Wheeler (No. 2) and junior Leanna Haynes (No. 1) made short work of their opponents to clinch the match.  Haynes was particularly impressive, defeating her regionally-ranked opponent easily, 6-2, 6-1.  SU's final point came from Knedlik at No. 6 but Camila Anguiano was just one game away from winning her match at No. 4, up 6-2, 5-2 when the match was called. The next day, Schreiner women's tennis team had a successful, and near perfect, day in western Louisiana by beating Centenary and then defeating LSU-Shreveport, 9-0. In the first match, the Mountaineers were nearly perfect in doubles, losing only one game total in recording a quick 3-0 lead. Sam Sterling's 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 6 singles set the pace for the rest of the match. Haynes' match at No. 1 singles was nearly as decisive as she won 6-2, 6-1. Kelsey Buczkowski returned from an injury suffered two weeks prior and scored the decisive point at No. 2 singles with a 6-4, 6-2 victory. Also getting straight set wins in singles were sophomores Brittney Garza at No. 4 and Payton Nelson at No. 5. Later in the day, SU faced LSU-Shreveport. Doubles play was almost as lopsided in SU's favor as in the Centenary match. LSUS got two games off the Mountaineers' three doubles teams total. Singles action was a blowout as Schreiner got 6-0, 6-0 wins from Haynes (No. 1 singles), Wheeler (No. 2), Anguiano (No .4) and Knedlik (No. 6). Swink was nearly perfect in her match at No. 3, losing just two games and freshman Watts lost only one at No. 5 singles.

Southwestern University
The Pirates hosted Austin College this weekend, defeating the ‘Roos 6-3. Doubles wins were key for the team, as they began the match with a 3-0 lead. Julie Swets and Emilie Moeller won 8-6 in the No. 1 spot, Kali Rose and Nicole Wilson took the No. 2 match 8-4 and Maranda Kahl and Virginia Stofer finished it out in the No. 3 match 8-2. AC took the first three singles matches, but Wilson (No. 4) won 6-3, 6-4, Rose (No. 5) 6-2, 6-2 and Kahl took No. 6 singles 6-1, 6-3.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs faced ITA West Region No. 14 University of Texas at Dallas this weekend, defeating the Comets 7-2. TLU started the match with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles. Brooke Taylor and Ashlynn Long teamed up at No. 2 while Caitlin Zarr and Joni Baxley at No. 3 won 8-5 and 8-3, respectively. In singles action, the Bulldogs rolled to straight-set victories at No. 1-5. Three-time All-American Sofia Vega posted a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 1 singles over an NCAA DIII tournament participant from UTD. Allison McLain and Zarr captured 6-1, 6-0 and 6-3, 6-1 wins at No. 2 and No. 2 singles, respectively. Taylor (No.4) and Baxley (No. 5) posted wins in their matches, 6-2, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3, respectively.

Trinity University
The Trinity women opened up a West Coast road trip with a 9-0 win over the California Institute of Technology Sunday. Trinity began the match with a 9-0 sweep in doubles action. The Tigers then won five of the six singles matches in straight sets en route to their second shutout of the season. Cheyenne Duncan won the lone three-set match of the day, taking a 6-3, 5-7, 12-10 victory at line five singles. Liza Southwick took the top line win in both singles and doubles. Blaire Porter teamed up with Duncan for a doubles victory as well a No. 3 singles win. Gabrielle Roe and Caroline White also won at No. 3 doubles. Roe and White each posted a singles victory as well. Kristy Hamilton won at No. 6 singles, while Marie Lutz teamed up with Southwick for the No. 1 doubles match.
