LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All six of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s swimming & diving teams competed this weekend.
Trinity University took on Claremont-Mudd-Scripps this weekend at the Palo Alto College Aquatic Center.
Austin College, Centenary College, Colorado College, McMurry University and Southwestern University all competed at the Trinity Western Shootout in Southlake, Texas, a competition made up of ten teams.
Southwestern won the women’s competition with Colorado College finishing in second. Centenary, McMurry and Austin College finished in sixth, seventh and eighth, respectively.
Austin College
The ‘Roos finished in eighth out of ten teams at the
Trinity Western Shootout this weekend with 188 points. AC began the
meet with a 13th place finish in the 200 yard freestyle
relay, as Lauren Wheeler, Sarah Mann, Simran Likhari and Caitlyn
Brugger teamed up. Wheeler earned a second place finishes in
both the 50 freestyle (25.09) and the 100 backstroke (59.54).
Wheeler remained AC’s top finisher, posting a time of 2:13.66
in the 200 backstroke for a fourth place finish. In the 200
butterfly, Caitlyn Brugger finished ninth with a time of 2:49.47.
Wheeler, Likhari and Mann teamed up with Sophie Anderson in the 200
medley relay, finishing in 11th place with a time of
2:06.52. Brugger earned an eighth place finish in the 400
individual medley with a time of 5:54.77. Likhari was the
‘Roos top finisher in the 100 breaststroke, earning
13th place with a time of 1:22.42.
Centenary College
The Ladies competed at the Trinity Western Shootout,
finishing in sixth place among the ten competitors and third among
SCAC opponents. In the first individual event of the day, Kayla
Thornhill finished 13th in the 500 yard freestyle with a
time of 5:39.32. Alexandria Taylor and Christy Wolterman finished
behind her in 15th and 18th, respectively. In
the 200 individual medley Chelsea Russell finished sixth with a
time of 2:19.32. The 400 yard medley relay team of Russell,
Thornhill, Jane Barney and Caitlyn Faulhaber took a ninth place
finish in the event with a time of 4:27.46 before earning an
identical finish in the 200 medley relay (2:01.81). Russell
continued her day by earning eighth in the 100 yard backstroke
(1:03.50), sixth in the 100 fly (1:03.25) and fifth in the 200 back
(2:14.05). Thornhill earned a sixth place finish in the 200 free
with a time of 2:05.13 and 12th in a close 100 free race
(57.97). The Ladies finished the day with a ninth place finish in
the 400 free relay, marking a time of 4:02.53.
Colorado College
Competing at sea level for the first time this season, the
Colorado College women's swimming and diving team finished second
out of 10 teams this weekend at the Western Shootout. Freshman
Ellen Silk took first place in the 100-yard butterfly
with a time of 59.05, touching the wall .34 ahead of Southwestern's
Kenly Gaynor. Silk's time of 1:39.88 in the 200 fly was good for
second place. Junior Megan Gillespie recorded
third-place finishes in the 400 individual medley (4:53.41) and the
100 breaststroke (1:11.53). In the 400 IM, junior Annalise
Grigereit took fourth while senior Carey Colbert
was sixth. The Big Cats also finished third in two of the four
relay events. Freshman Justina Zuckerman, sophomore
Zoe Pierrat and junior Erin Holmes combined
for a time of 1:45.09 in the 200 free relay, while freshman
Hannah Cooper and senior Emma Holmes teamed
with Gillespie and Colbert in the 400 medley relay. Colorado
College's received fourth-place finishes from freshman Emily
Harrison in the 500 freestyle (5:24.17), junior Becca
Adams in the 200 breaststroke (2:41.88) and Emma
Holmes in the 1650 free (19:41.27). Freshman Mary Rose
Donahue won all four diving events and met the NCAA
qualifying score three times. She surpassed the 11-dive standard on
the by 47.79 with a score of 442.79, while her 3-meter effort
424.42 was 14.42 better than the qualifying mark. Junior
Samantha Buxbaum took second in all four events, with
11-dive scores of 348.29 on the 1-meter board and 314.23 in the
3-meter.
McMurry University
McMurry's women placed seventh at the 2014 Trinity Western
Shootout this weekend. Freshman Robyn Remschel had
another big meet for McMurry. Remschel, was the only War Hawk
swimmer – from either the men's or women's squads – to
win an event at the prestigious meet, earning top honors in two.
Remschel posted personal-best times in both the 100 and 200 yard
backstroke races. In the 100 back, she was clocked at 59.52 seconds
and followed that with a 2:09.90 time in the 200 back - better than
two seconds faster than the runner-up finisher in the
event. Remschel also teamed up with Zandria
Rodriguez, Kelsey Frazier and Kelly
McNamee on the McM 400 medley relay, which placed seventh out
of 14 teams in a time of 4:21.51. Individually, Frazier picked up a
seventh in the 100 butterfly (1:04.42).
Southwestern University
A ten-team meet couldn't stop the Pirate swimming and
diving team on their tear through November as they brought home
first place on both sides. The women posted 697 points. The women
had a big night on Friday, closing day one of the two-day shootout
in first place. The 200 free relay took first place, finishing in
1:40.56. The women also had a first place relay finish in the 400
medley relay with a time of 4:07.78. The women had a two, three,
five finish in the 200 IM with Natalie Lesnick, Ryann Lawley and
Taylor Adams. The women's 200 medley relay was the only first place
finish on the women's side on day two. Madison Doty, Adams, Blythe
Nava and Marisa McCormack finished in 1:52.05, out-touching UTPB at
the wall. The women had six second place finishes on day two and
the men seven to secure the win.
Trinity University
The Trinity women’s swimming and diving teams lost a
dual meet against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges at Palo Alto
College Aquatic Center. The women were edged 178-150 by the Athenas
in the two-day meet. Tiger women’s divers, though, captured
the top-three places on the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Dani
Freund won the high board Friday, posting a score of 287.25. Mollie
Patzke finished just percentage points behind at 287.15, and Sarah
Kate Mrkonich came in third at 277.45. Freund took top honors
on Saturday’s 1-meter event (309.90), Christine Peterson was
runner-up (283.40), and Mrkonich finished third (281.90). Freund,
Patzke, Mrkonich, Peterson, and Ashley Heline will represent
Trinity February 27-28 at the NCAA Division III Diving Zone
Regional, to be held at San Antonio’s Blossom Athletic
Center. The Tiger women won six swimming events in the meet, with
Lydia Jones capturing top honores in three events: 50-yard
freestyle (23.89 seconds), 100 freestyle (52.07 seconds), and the
200 freestyle (1:54.95). Thea Hesson brought home the 400
individual medley (4:48.11), and Kelly Holton won the 100
breaststroke (1:07.12). Becca Bond was the 200 backstroke winner
(2:11.38).
