Men's Basketball Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

Lawrenceville, GA. – Seven of the eight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference teams competed this week, going 5-7 cumulatively.

The University of Dallas marked their first loss of the season, falling to Millsaps College on the road.

Trinity University narrowly missed an upset of the No. 4 ranked Washington University, falling 79-77 on the road.

Austin College
The ‘Roos played one game this week, falling to Hendrix College 76-69 at home. Brian Baehl led the team with 22 points in the game, shooting 8-15 from the field and a perfect 4-4 from the charity stripe, while adding five rebounds, two assists and a steal. Austin Freet followed Baehl up with 18 points of his own, putting up four rebounds, one steal, two blocks and a team-leading three assists. Ryan Reibly led the team with eight rebounds. The ‘Roos shot 34.8% from the field and 33.3% from three-point range.

Centenary College
The Gents split their games last week, falling to cross town rival LSU-Shreveport 66-59 Tuesday evening before defeating Hendrix College 93-63 over the weekend. Against LSUS, Centenary fell victim to a 32-20 deficit at the break. The Gents were able to outscore LSUS 39-34 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for a comeback. James Sapp led the team with 21 points, shooting 7-10 from the field and 7-8 from the charity stripe. Sapp also marked six rebounds, one assists, two steals and a block. Brandon Campbell added 10 points, while Caden Cheramie led the team with 10 rebounds. To close out the weekend, the Gents took on the Warriors Sunday afternoon, marking a large victory. Four players scored in the double digits, led by Cheramie who put up 17 points. Justin Cueto and Travion Kirkendoll each added 15, while Sapp rounded out the group with 14. Sapp led the team with eight rebounds, while Cheramie, Kirkendoll and Kendall Demouchet each put up a team-leading four assists. Demouchet also led the team with four steals. The Gents were able to force 26 turnovers by the Warriors, which led to 40 points.

Colorado College
The Tigers do not resume their schedule until December 16.

University of Dallas
The Crusaders began the week with an 85-62 win over Southwestern Adventist University in their home opener, moving their winning streak to seven games. Michael Sarrat led the team with 17 points, while Blaine Blackburn and Victor Garate were behind him with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Twelve members of the team marked at least two points in the game. Kym Malone led the team with five rebounds, while Blackburn and Lorenzo Gonzalez each put up five assists. The Crusaders outrebounded SWAU 36-27 and forced 17 turnovers that led the 24 points, while only marking eight turnovers themselves. After the dominating win, they traveled to Jackson, Miss. to take on Millsaps College, but earned their first loss of the season, falling 63-57. Aaron Wyatt, Malone and Blackburn each put up 10 points in the game, while Malone and Wyatt led the team with eight rebounds apiece. Despite pulling down 43 rebounds, they committed 14 turnovers that led to 13 points for the Majors.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers earned a close 79-78 win over the University of Texas-Tyler on Monday. SU was down 39-30 at the break, but outscored the Patriots 49-39 in the second half to earn the win. Stevan Guerrero marked a season-best 19 points in the game to lead the team, while adding eight rebounds to tie his season best. Ryan Evans was behind him with 12 points, while Wes Miller rounded out the leading scorers with 10. Both teams shot over .500, with Schreiner going 24-48 from the field. The Mountaineers relied on 32 points from the bench, and had just two players that didn’t mark any points.

Southwestern University
The Pirates traveled to Belton, Texas to take on the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, but fell 68-71. After getting down 44-38 in the first half, the Pirates outscored the Cru 30-27, but it wasn’t enough. Zach Whitlock led the team with 16 points, eight rebounds and four assists, while Travis Kurtz put up 15 points, shooting 5-7 from the field and 4-6 from behind the arc in just 15 minutes of play. Chris Molina rounds out the double-digit scorers, adding 11 points.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs split their week, defeating McMurry 80-66 on Tuesday evening before falling to East Texas Baptist 80-73 Saturday. Against McM, the Bulldogs shot 50% from the field and 41% from long-range. Jordan Kouremetis led the team with 14 points, while Garrett Wilkins was close behind with 13. Austin Pickens rounded out the leading scorers with 10 points of his own. Donte McGee and Wilkins each put up a team-leading seven rebounds, while Joseph Richardson led the squad with five assists. The Bulldogs earned 41 points from the bench, marking at least one point from 13 different players. To close out the week, the Bulldogs faced ETBU, but fell in a close battle. Kouremetis led the team again, putting up 17 points, while making four shots from beyond the arc. Sterling Holmes was behind him with 16 points, including a perfect 9-9 mark from the charity stripe. McGee earned the first double-double of the season, putting up 10 points and pulling down 12 rebounds in the game.

Trinity University
The Tigers had a busy week, taking on Concordia University Monday evening before traveling to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Emory University and Washington University. The Tigers fell to 0-7 this weekend with losses in all three games. To begin the week, the Tigers fell 81-55 to Concordia. AJ Pulliam led the team with 16 points, shooting 3-4 from the field and 10-12 from the free-throw line. Pulliam also led the team with seven rebounds and two steals. Matt Selling put up 11 points  in the game. Friday evening, the Tigers fell to sixth-ranked Emory 83-74. Pulliam led the team again, marking 23 points. Selling put up 14 in the game, while adding five rebounds and three assists. William Young led the team with seven assists, while Jimmy Clark put up six rebounds to lead the way. The Tigers marked their best shooting of the season in 79-77 loss to No. 4 WashU. Trinity shot 56% from the field, including 60% from beyond the arc, their best performance of the season. Pulliam continued to lead the team, putting up 22 points, while Selling added 19 and Brian Blum put up 13. Selling shot 5-6 from beyond the arc, while also leading the team with seven rebounds.
