Trinity's Reid, Cardone Named SCAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Freshman defender Kellen Reid and senior goalkeeper Matt Cardone of Trinity University were named Players of the Week for their performance in week six of the SCAC Men's Soccer season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of September 29th – October 5th

KELLEN REID OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a freshman defender from Coppell, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 29th through Sunday, October 5th. 

Reid helped No. 3 Trinity to a pair of SCAC victories over the weekend, defeating both Centenary and Colorado College to take sole possession of first place in the standings.

Reid scored the game’s only goal in a 1-0 win over No. 16 Colorado College on Sunday afternoon. Reid broke a scoreless tie with his goal in the 57th minute, and the TU Tigers held on for the win from there.

The goal on Sunday was the first of the career for Reid, and he is the ninth different Tiger player this season to score a game-winning goal. 


Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Junior midfielder Max Grossenbacher of Colorado College scored twice in a span of 45 seconds midway through the first half to lead Colorado College to a 3-0 victory at Southwestern University on Friday night. Grossenbacher put CC on the board with a penalty kick in the 21st minute and scored again on the Tigers’ next possession on a low shot from 35 yards out. Senior midfielder Nathan Nwaeze of Dallas scored twice in to snap a five game losing streak for the Crusaders in a 2-1 win over Schreiner. He was a huge part in the 1-0 win over Texas Lutheran. Senior forward Justin Edwards of Schreiner helped lead the Mountaineers to a 1-1 week with two goals this week, including a game winning goal vs. Austin College. Freshman midfielder Andres Carreno-Mendez of Southwestern was at it again for the Pirates, scoring the game winning goal in overtime to defeat Centenary, 1-0. Junior midfielder Isaac Lopez of Texas Lutheran came up with the crucial assist off a free kick on the game-winning goal in TLU's 1-0 OT win over Austin College. Austin College and Centenary did not nominate anyone.


SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MATT CARDONE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, September 29th through Sunday, October 5th. 

Cardone led Trinity to a pair of shutouts against Texas Lutheran, Centenary, and No. 16 Colorado College this weekend, vaulting the team into sole possession of first place in the SCAC standings.

After a four save, clean sheet performance against TLU, Cardone tallied one save in just under 75 minutes in Friday’s win over Centenary, but it was his performance against Colorado College that was the defensive highlight for the TU Tigers. Cardone posted six saves in the game to tie his season-best performance, posting the team’s fourth consecutive clean sheet, and the third solo shutout of the year for the senior.

For the season, Cardone has recorded 35 saves in 12 games played, yielding eight goals in more than 900 minutes in net. He holds a goals-against average of 0.79 on the year. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman goalkeeper Theo Hooker of Colorado College  stopped both shots on goal in Friday’s 3-0 victory at Southwestern for his fifth clean sheet of the season. During Sunday’s 1-0 loss at Trinity, he recorded a season-high seven saves. Senior defender James Bernard of Dallas led the Dallas defense over the weekend in a pair of wins over Schreiner and TLU. Bernard and the Crusader allowed a total of two goals over the weekend in the win. Freshman defender Tanner Irons of Southwestern was key for the Pirates over the weekend, cleaning up a lot of traffic to solidify the defense. Sophomore defender Nathan Drouillard of Texas Lutheran scored the Bulldogs' only goal of the weekend, netting home a header in a 1-0 overtime win over Austin College. Austin College, Centenary, and Schreiner did not nominate anyone.
