Trinity's Mandelkorn, Cardone Named SCAC Men's Soccer Players of the Week

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - First-year defender Brent Mandelkorn and senior goalkeeper Matt Cardone, both of Trinity University, were named Players of the Week for their performances in week seven of the SCAC men's soccer season.

 

 

 

 

 

 

SCAC OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Games of October 6th – October 12th

BRENT MANDELKORN OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a first-year defender from Frisco, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Offensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 6th through Sunday, October 12th. 

Mandelkorn nailed the only goal of the game as #3 Trinity defeated #14 Colorado College in the weekend finale on Sunday afternoon. Mandelkorn notched the goal in the second minute of action, as Trinity beat Colorado 1-0 for the second time in a week to take control atop of the SCAC standings.

For the season, Mandelkorn is tied for second on the team with five goals scored, but now leads all Tiger players with three game-winning goals. 

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
First-year midfielder Garrett Matacale of Austin College scored once and had an assist on another goal over the weekend as the 'Roos took on Texas Lutheran and Schreiner. Matacale's goal came on a penalty kick against Schreiner, the same game in which he had an assist. Senior forward Brandon Ogilvie of Colorado College recorded a goal and an assist during Friday's 2-0 win over Southwestern. Ogilvie's tally in the 15th minute proved to be his fourth game winner of the season and the 13th of his career. Ogilvie became the 15th Tiger to record 30 or more career goals, tying Jim Grice (1982-85) for 14th place on the program's all-time list. The senior forward also became CC's 20th player to record 70 or more career points and is tied with Eddie Dietz (1976-79) and Tyler Free (1997-00) for 18th place. Junior forward Colton Allen of Dallas tallied a game-winning goal and amassed a team-high six shots in two Crusaders' wins this weekend at Schreiner and Texas Lutheran. His netter was his sixth on the campaign, a team-best. In Sunday's victory at TLU, the junior forward tied a team-high, three shot attempts placing on on goal. He hit a .500 (3-for-6) SOG%. Sophomore defender Nick Petterson of Southwestern scored his first career goal late in the second half to earn a point on the road at Centenary as the Pirates had to settle for the 2-2 draw. CentenarySchreiner and Texas Lutheran did not nominate anyone for the award.


SCAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

MATT CARDONE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a senior goalkeeper from San Antonio, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men's Soccer Defensive Player-of-the-Week for matches played from Monday, October 6th through Sunday, October 12th.

It is the second consecutive week that the senior has received the weekly conference honor. 

Cardone was at the net for the entire 90 minutes against 14th-ranked Colorado College, and chalked up a season-high 10 saves. He now has 45 saves to his credit this season, along with four of the Tigers' seven shutouts.

With Sunday's victory, Trinity swept the season series with Colorado College and remains firmly in first place in the SCAC standings.

Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Freshman goalkeeper Theo Hooker of Colorado College stopped nine of the 10 shots he faced to help the Tigers earn a split last weekend. The freshman keeper made three saves during Friday's 2-0 victory over Southwestern, his sixth clean sheet of the season. Hooker steered aside six of seven shots in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Trinity. Sophomore defender David Arellano of Southwestern has been the Pirates' most consistent defensive performer all season, and put in another stellar effort on the road against Colorado College. On Sunday against Centenary, Arellano once again was solid while frequently joining the attack. Junior goalkeeper Jonathan Michael of Texas Lutheran allowed just one goal in two conference games over the weekend. He made seven saves for an .875 save percentage for the weekend, including six saves in Sunday's 1-0 loss to Dallas. Austin CollegeCentenaryDallas and Schreiner did not nominate anyone.
