LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All eight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball teams competed this weekend.
Centenary College moved into the top spot in the standings this weekend with a record of 6-2 after defeating Trinity University and Schreiner University on the road.
Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University are tied for second with records of 5-2. Southwestern defeated both Austin College and the University of Dallas, while Texas Lutheran split their weekend.
Colorado College fell in both road games this weekend, getting defeated Saturday by Trinity. This marked Trinity’s first conference win of the season.
Austin College
The ‘Roos hosted Texas Lutheran and Southwestern
this weekend, falling short in both contests. Friday night, the
Bulldogs came to Sherman. After earning a 27-22 lead going into
halftime, AC was outscored 44-27 in the second half, ending the
game in a 66-54 loss. Brian Baehl led the team with 19 points,
eight rebounds and three assists in the game, connecting on 10 of
13 shots from the charity stripe. Aaron Anwary followed Baehl up
with nine points, while Austin Freet and Jeremy Swisher each added
seven. The following night, the ‘Roos hosted Southwestern.
Like the previous game, AC entered the break with a lead (37-26),
but hot shooting by the Pirates in the second half, including a
mark of .800 from beyond the arc, handed the ‘Roos a 69-64
loss. Three players marked double-digit scoring marks, led by Alan
Sullivan with 21 points. Swisher added 16 points, while Baehl
followed behind with 15. Austin Freet led the team with 12
rebounds. The ‘Roos posted a +5 rebounding margin in the
game, but a .375 shooting performance from the field held them
back.
Centenary College
The Gents hit the road this weekend, taking on Trinity
and Schreiner on Friday and Saturday night, respectively. Against
Trinity, Centenary faced a 16-point deficit heading into halftime
after shooting 21.4% from the field, and failing to connect on a
three-point attempt. In the second half, the Gents improved to
55.6% shooting, which helped them match the Tigers. A tip-in shot
by TU with one second left on the clock sent the game into
overtime, but Centenary outscored the Tigers 9-4 in the extra
period for a 79-74 win. James Sapp led the team with 33 points, 13
rebounds and five steals in the game. Sapp went to the charity
stripe for 18 shots, connecting on 13 of these. Brandon Campbell
added 14 points in the game followed by 10 from Caden Cheramie.
Cheramie also added seven rebounds, four assists and a pair of
steals. The following night the Gents defeated Schreiner 62-58 in
another comeback victory. Kendall Demouchet led the team with 14
points, while Sapp had another impressive game with 12 points and a
team-leading 14 boards. Travion Kirkendoll rounded out the
top-scorers with 11 points. The Gents shot .523 from the field in
the game, while notching a +12 rebounding margin.
Colorado College
The Tigers went 1-2 last week, defeating non-conference
opponent Johnson & Wales University on Tuesday evening, before
falling to Schreiner and Trinity on the road. Against JWU, Luke
Winfield and Chris Lesnansky led the scoring attack with 19 and 18
points, respectively. Winfield also pulled down a team-leading
eight rebounds in the game. The Tigers shot over .500 from the
field and posting a +15 rebounding margin over the Wildcats. Friday
night, the Tigers lost to Schreiner after leading the Mountaineers
by three points at halftime. Lesnansky led the team with 16 points
and five rebounds in the game. CC shot .429 from the field, but
just .190 from beyond the arc. Against Trinity, CC couldn’t
stop a hot shooting performance from the Texas Tigers and fell
74-54. Justin Berardino led the team with 13 points and six
rebounds, followed by nine points from Russell Clark and eight from
Winfield.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders stayed at the Maher Athletic Center this
weekend, playing host to Southwestern and Texas Lutheran. Friday,
Dallas took on the Pirates, but fell 87-77, despite shooting .552
from the field. All five of the starters posted double-digit
scoring numbers, led by Aaron Wyatt with 17 points. Mark Promberger
and Michael Sarrat followed with 13 and 12 points, respectively,
while Kym Malone added 11 points and Blaine Blackburn knocked down
10. Wyatt also led the team with 7 rebounds, while Malone dished
out nine assists. Saturday night, the Crusaders picked up their
second SCAC victory, defeating Texas Lutheran 73-68. Malone totaled
19 points to lead the team, followed by 16 from Wyatt. For the
third game in a row, Wyatt led the team’s rebounding effort,
pulling down nine boards. The Crusaders shot .455 from the field
and .467 form beyond the arc, while holding a +5 rebounding
margin.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers began the week Tuesday with an 81-66 win
over Trinity. Five players posted double-digit scoring marks, led
by 15 points from Jared Thompson. Christian Pena added 11 points,
while Charlie Nunez, Hollis Robinson and Stevan Guerrero each added
10. Thompson also led the team with eight rebounds and two steals.
The Mountaineers shot .521 from the field and connected on 26 free
throws in the win. A +18 rebounding margin, including 14 offensive
boards, helped Schreiner with 13 second-chance points. Friday, the
team hosted Colorado College, defeating the Tigers 70-66. Keenan
Gumbs came off the bench to lead the team with 16 points, also
tying Robinson with eight boards to lead the squad. Wes Miller
posted a perfect 7-7 mark from the charity stripe, adding 13 points
for the Mountaineers, while Guerrero and Nunez added 11 and 10,
respectively. To end the week, Schreiner hosted Centenary, but fell
62-58 to the Gents. Guerrero posted a team-high 13 points in the
game, while also leading in rebounds (4), assists (5) and steals
(4) in 37 minutes of play. Miller was the only other Mountaineer to
post a double-digit scoring mark, totaling 11 points in the
game.
Southwestern University
The Pirates continued a four game winning streak this
week, defeating Dallas and Austin College on the road. Friday
night, Southwestern earned a 10-point win over Dallas, defeating
the Crusaders 87-77. Ryan Ogden led the team with 23 points,
shooting 7-8 from the floor. Chris Lee posted 19 and Zach Whitlock
followed with 10 points to round out the top scorers. The Pirates
shot .538 from the field and .462 from beyond the arc. The
following night, Southwestern earned a close win, defeating AC
69-64 in a comeback win. The Pirates faced an 11-point deficit at
halftime, but battled back in the final minutes to secure a win.
Ben Stiver came off the bench with a perfect shooting performance
to lead the Pirates with 19 points. Stiver connected on all seven
of his field goals, while notching five from beyond the arc in just
24 minutes of play. Zach Whitlock was the only other Pirate to
score double-digits, notching 15 points. Ogden led the team with
seven boards.
Texas Lutheran
The Bulldogs split their weekend on the road, defeating
Austin College on Friday night, but falling to Dallas Saturday.
Against the ‘Roos, TLU came back from a five-point halftime
deficit to earn a 66-54 win. Zach Behr came off the bench to score
18 points, leading the team. Thomas Verm added 12 points, while
Sterling Holmes scored 11 and added a team-high eight rebounds and
three assists. The Bulldogs defense held AC to .274 field goal
shooting, while pulling down 42 rebounds. They also forced 17
turnovers which led to 17 points. The following night, the Bulldogs
couldn’t come back from another halftime deficit and fell
73-68 to Dallas. Donte McGee posted team-highs in scoring (15),
rebounds, (9) and steals (2) in the game, while Holmes and Garrett
Wilkins each added 10 points.
Trinity University
The Tigers had a busy week, taking on Schreiner Tuesday
and hosting Centenary and Colorado College over the weekend. In
their first matchup, Trinity fell to the Mountaineers 81-66 on the
road. Jimmy Clark led the team with 20 points in the game, while
adding five rebounds. Matt Jones and Brian Blum were the only other
double-digit scorers with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Jones
matched Clark with five rebounds. Joseph Thomas added eight points
and a game-high four steals. Friday night, the Tigers nearly earned
their first SCAC win of the season, but fell 79-74 in overtime to
Centenary. The game began with the Tigers on a 22-2 run. They held
a 45-29 lead at the break after holding the Gents to .214 shooting
in the first half. A hot-shooting second half for Centenary put
them back in the game, and gave them the lead with seconds
remaining. Jimmy Clark missed the game-winning three pointer with
two seconds on the clock, but Joseph Thomas tipped the ball back in
to tie it at 70 apiece. In overtime, the Gents outscored Trinity
and earned the win. AJ Pulliam led the team with 14 points, while
Blum added 12 points in just 16 minutes. Nik Oakes added eight
points and a team-high seven rebounds in the game, while Jones put
up eight and a game-high seven assists. The following night,
Trinity earned its first conference win of 2014-15, defeating
Colorado College 74-54. The Tigers shot .540 from the floor and
.458 from beyond the arc in the game, while holding CC to .419
shooting. Pulliam led the team with 24 points in the game,
connecting on all three of his three-point attempts and adding
three blocks for the Tigers. Blum and Matt Selling each added 13
points for the team, while Selling also posted five boards to lead
the team and Jones marked a game-high nine assists.
