LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - In exclusive voting by the head coaches in the league, Sofia Vega of Texas Lutheran University has been selected the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Women’s Tennis Player-of-the-Year for the second consecutive year and Anthony Weber of Colorado College was voted Women’s Coach-of-the-Year. In that same balloting, Fiona Cerf of Colorado College was selected as SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year.
TLU’s Vega, a junior from Corpus Christi, Texas, is the No. 3-ranked player in the ITA West Region and undefeated against NCAA Division III competition this spring (15-1 overall). Her only loss was a three-set loss to a regionally-ranked DII opponent. A three-time All-American, Vega repeated this year as an ITA regional champion and played in the ITA National Small College Championship as the No. 2 overall seed. She also earned SCAC All-Tournament honors for the second consecutive year with a 2-0 mark at this year’s championships. Vega is currently 26-3 overall in 2014-15 (counting fall and spring results) and 79-12 in singles play and 47-28 in doubles for her career. She is the first SCAC women’s tennis player to earn back-to-back Player-of-the-Year honors since DePauw University’s Janelle Arita (2010-2011).
Vega received six first-place votes in the Player-of-the-Year while Trinity University’s Liza Southwick of Trinity University received the remaining vote.
Colorado College’s Cerf, a first-year player from Seattle, Wash., posted an 11-4 singles mark at the No. 1 position for the Tigers with her only losses in D3 competition coming at the hands of two regionally ranked players – Vega of Texas Lutheran and Bridget Bellissimo of Wisconsin-Lacrosse. Paired with senior Mary Edman, Cerf went 14-4 at No. 1 doubles with D3 losses to Texas Lutheran, Trinity and Wisconsin-Lacrosse. This past fall, she picked up a singles win at the ITA West Regional before falling to the No. 3 seeded Katie Kuosman of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in the second round.
Cerf received three votes in the tightly contested Newcomer-of-the-Year balloting. Marie Lutz of Trinity and Allison McLain of Texas Lutheran received two votes each. All three earned First-Team All-SCAC honors.
Colorado College’s Weber was named SCAC Women’s Tennis Coach-of-the-Year after leading his squad to a second-place finish at the 2015 conference championship tournament. Competing with a roster that listed four of its top six singles players as either freshmen or sophomores, Weber guided the Tigers to the conference championship final – a first for the program since joining the SCAC prior to the 2007 season. Colorado College finished the 2014-15 campaign with a 9-9 record, the most wins in a season since 2011-12.
Weber received three first-place votes in the Coach-of-the-Year balloting. Wade Morgan of Schreiner University received two votes while and Michael Hunt of Texas Lutheran and Gretchen Rush of Trinity received one vote each from their peers.
