Trinity Rolls Past La Verne in First Round of NCAA Tournament

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. - The 21st-ranked Trinity volleyball team opened its part in the NCAA Division III Thousand Oaks Regional with a convincing 25-20, 25-20, 25-15 victory over the No. 25 University of La Verne Leopards on Friday nightInteractive Bracket | Regional Website | Box Score Postgame Interview

Trinity (29-9) will take on the winner of host California Lutheran University (ranked No. 3) and Whitworth University at 6:00 p.m. PST Saturday. The winner advances to the NCAA Sweet 16 Sunday at 2:00 p.m., also at Cal Lutheran.

All-American Maggie Emodi had a stellar match, hitting .500. Emodi accounted for 15 kills, did not make an error, and initiated 30 attacks. Trinity’s two other All-Americans also contributed greatly to the win. Erin Cusenbary produced 10 kills and five blocks, while Layne Hubbard chalked up 14 digs.

Erika Edrington recorded a double-double with 36 assists and 15 digs, while blocking four shots. Shannon Courtney added 13 digs for the Tigers, who are competing in their third straight NCAA Tournament, and 21st overall.

Trinity hosted the NCAA Regional last year, and advanced to the final match. Cal Lutheran emerged as the winner in Sams Gym.
