LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Six of the eight Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s basketball teams competed last week, amassing a total record of 10-4.
Schreiner University swept their week, earning wins against McMurry University, Pacific Lutheran University and Anderson University at the Trinity Classic.
Texas Lutheran University earned wins in both of their games, defeating Anderson and Wheaton College.
Trinity University picked up their first win of the season, defeating Pacific Lutheran.
Southwestern had two wins this week, both at the Trinity Classic.
Austin College split the week, earning a dominating win over Millsaps College before falling to Hendrix College.
Austin College
The ‘Roos began their weekend on the road at Millsaps, defeating the Majors 77-47. The ‘Roos got out to a quick start, leading 34-18 at halftime, and extended that lead in the second half by outscoring MC 43-29.Three ‘Roos marked a team-high 11 points, Brian Baehl, Austin Freet and Cedric Hudson. Ryan Reibly led the team with nine rebounds and four assists, while Freet followed him up with seven rebounds. AC shot 49.2% from the field and led 49-30 in rebounding. To follow up their big win, the ‘Roos traveled to Hendrix, but fell 54-52 despite leading 34-23 at halftime. The Warriors began the second half on a 15-4 run, earning a one-point lead with just under 12 minutes remaining in the contest. After Reibly made a three-pointer to tie the game up with 21 seconds remaining, HC made the go-ahead layup with three seconds left and the ‘Roos couldn’t match it. Baehl was the top scorer again, putting up 13 points, while Andres Rivera followed behind him with 11, including a perfect 3-3 performance from beyond the arc.
Colorado College
After having over two weeks off, the Colorado College
Tigers earned their fourth win of the season at home against
Johnson & Wales University. The Tigers led 31-22 at halftime,
but were outscored in the second half 35-30, bringing the game to a
final score of 61-57. Luke Winfield led the scoring attack, marking
a team-high 10 points. 11 of the Tigers’ 12 players marked at
least two points in the game, including seven who scored five or
more. Chris Lesnansky pulled down eight rebounds to match his eight
points in the game, while John Hatch recorded nine points, three
rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks off the bench.
The Tigers shot .403 from the floor and forced 18 turnovers by JWU
that led to 26 points.
Schreiner University
The Mountaineers went 3-0 this week, beginning in Abilene,
Texas at McMurry University with a 60-53 win over the Warhawks. The
game remained close throughout, with Schreiner holding a 29-27 lead
at the break. Maverick Harris led the team with 19 points, making
five three-pointers. He was followed by Wes Miller who marked nine
points and Hollis Robinson with eight. Stevan Guerrero led the team
with nine rebounds and six assists. Following this, they traveled
to San Antonio for the Trinity Classic, earning two more wins. The
Mountaineers began with a record-breaking performance against
Pacific Lutheran in a 79-68 defeat. Harris led the team again with
22 points, shooting a perfect 6-6 from three-point range, which now
ranks third in SCAC history for three-point field goal percentage.
The Mountaineers shot (91.7%) as a team from long-range, which sets
the new record for three-point field goal percentage, knocking out
the previous record of 83.3% that has held since 1996. Schreiner
shot 61.5% from the floor. Jared Thompson followed Harris with 15
points, while Keenan Gumbs marked 10. The Mountaineers also led the
Lutes 40-15 in rebounds. To close out the week, the Mountaineers
defeated Anderson 65-62. Miller led the team with 19 points,
shooting a perfect 6-6 from the charity stripe and 6-9 from the
floor. Christian Pena was right behind him with 18 points. Pena
also tied Guerrero for a team-leading seven rebounds, while
Guerrero also added six assists and two steals.
Southwestern University
The Pirates earned two wins on the road this weekend,
defeating SUNYIT Friday and Pacific Lutheran Saturday. To begin the
week, the Pirates earned a dominating 87-65 win over SUNYIT,
holding the opponent to just 35% field goal shooting, while forcing
21 turnovers. The Pirates, however, shot 50% from the floor and
55.6% from three-point range. Chris Molina led the team with 21
points in the game, shooting 7-8 from the floor and 4-5 from beyond
the arc. Ryan Ogden was behind Molina with 17 points, making 12 of
14 free throws in the game, and Chris Lee rounded out the top
scorers with 13 points. Ogden also led the team with 10 rebounds,
four assists, three steals and one block, picking up his first
double-double of the season. To close out the weekend, the Pirates
had a tough battle with PLU, but earned a 53-49 win. The Lutes held
a 26-20 lead at halftime, and extended that lead to 10 points with
16 minutes left in the game. The Pirates fought back, to outscore
PLU 33-23 in the second half. Ogden led the team with 20 points,
while tallying five rebounds. Zach Whitlock put up 17 points and a
team-leading eight rebounds and two steals in the game. Blake Scott
added six rebounds in the game.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs continued the season with two wins this
weekend, defeating Anderson 80-76 to begin the Trinity Classic.
Sterling Holmes led the team with 25 points and four assists, while
adding six rebounds. Donte McGee added 15 points, seven rebounds,
one assist, two steals and a block. Garrett Wilkins rounded out the
double-digit scorers with 11 points. Jordan Kouremetis led the team
with eight rebounds, while putting up nine points. The Bulldogs
shot 41.4% from the field and held a dominating 49-29 rebounding
advantage. The following afternoon, the Bulldogs took on Wheaton,
defeating them 63-56. Holmes continued his impressive weekend,
leading the team with 16 points, adding five rebounds, three
assists and two steals. Kouremetis was right behind Holmes with 15
points and five rebounds. McGee led the team with 11 rebounds and
two blocks in the game. The Bulldogs held a 39-27 edge on the
boards.
Trinity University
The Tigers went 1-2 on the week, earning their first win
of the season over SUNYIT Saturday. To begin the week, the Tigers
hosted Whitworth, falling 67- 52. Despite shooting over 50% from
the field, TU wasn’t able to stop a hot shooting attack from
Whitworth, who shot 57.9% from long-range. A.J. Pulliam led the
team with 22 points, adding a team-leading 3 rebounds. Selling
added nine points in the game and matched Pulliam with three
rebounds. Friday, the team took on Wheaton, but fell 68-63. Craig
Saltarelli led the Tigers with 15 points, while Selling added 11
and Jimmy Clark put up 10. Brain Blum led the team with five
rebounds, while William Young put up four assists. The Tigers only
committed 10 turnovers, while forcing 17 by Wheaton, which led to
19 points. Wheaton led 33-to-25 on the boards. To close out the
week, the Tigers defeated SUNYIT 65-61 in a comeback win, earning
their first win of the season. SUNYIT led 37-29 at the break, and
maintained a 10-point lead with less than five minutes remaining in
the game. A pair of three-pointers by Selling and Pulliam gave the
Tigers a two point lead with 2:32 on the clock, and SUNYIT was only
able to get one more score, while TU added four.
Selling led the team again with 22 points, while
Pulliam was right behind him with 20. Josh Ingram led on the boards
with eight rebounds, while dishing out five assists.
