Women's Tennis Recap (Week 8) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All seven Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams were in action this week.

Austin College took on two SCAC opponents on the road, while Centenary College faced off against two in-state foes, splitting their matches. Colorado College faced three tough non-Division III opponents.

Schreiner University picked up two wins in three matches this weekend. Southwestern University went 2-1 on the week, falling only to nationally-ranked University of Texas-Tyler.

Texas Lutheran University and Trinity University each went 1-1 through the week.

Austin College
The ‘Roos got back to competition after a couple weeks off, taking on two SCAC opponents on the road. Friday, AC took on Texas Lutheran, but fell 7-2. The ‘Roos got their first point at No. 3 doubles as the pair of Cierra White and Magan Green took a closely contested match 9-8 (4). In single action, the Bulldogs took four of the matches in straight sets. In the third-line, Cierra White rallied back from a 6-1 loss in the first set to take the second 6-0 and forced a tiebreaker. She couldn’t take down her opponent, however, and fell 10-8. Green earned AC’s final point of the day at No. 6 singles. Saturday, the ‘Roos traveled to Schreiner to take on the Mountaineers. SU proved to be too much for them, as they fell 8-1. Their only point on the day came at No. 2 singles as Kate Willis won 7-6 (5), 7-6 (5).

Centenary College
The Centenary women’s tennis team split a pair of matches over the week as the Ladies blanked Louisiana College 9-0 on Tuesday afternoon before falling 7-2 to Louisiana State University-Shreveport. The Ladies’ win marks their first of the season. The Maroon and White took all three points in doubles action with the pairing of Katie Cornwell and Katelyn Alexander winning the top spot 8-1. Laura Beurlot and Celia Sobleman followed with an 8-0 in the No. 2 slot as Gemma Zuniga and Nicole Martinez won the third line in an 8-6 battle. The No. 3-5 singles positions were claimed in straight sets by Alexander, Sobleman and Martinez, respectively. Cornwell added a 6-0, 6-1 decision at the No. 2 slot with Zuniga winning 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6. Beurlot won the second set in convincing fashion, 6-1, after edging Kortney Kling 7-6 in the opener at No. 1. Against LSUS, Alexander claimed the Ladies’ only singles’ point with a 6-1, 6-2 decision. Alexander along with Cornwell claimed the first point for Centenary at the No. 1 doubles position with an 8-3 outcome.

Colorado College
The Tigers faced all non-Division III opponents this week, going 1-2 over the three matches. They began with an 8-1 victory over NAIA Hasting College. The Tigers swept doubles action, led by an 8-3 win in the top position by Fiona Cerf and Mary Edman. In the second line, Maggie Harwood and Maddie Cahill-Sanidas teamed up for an 8-5 victory before Gillian Hyde and Natalia Dellavalle took the No. 3 spot 8-4. In singles play, the Tigers took five of the six, falling only at the No. 4 spot in a three-set battle. Cerf, Edman, Dellavalle and Hyde gave up just two games apiece in their matches, while Cahill-Sanidas faced more opposition, winning her match at No. 5 6-2, 7-5. That same day, the Tigers faced Division II Colorado State University-Pueblo, but dropped a 7-2 decision. The top duo of Cerf/Edman won their match 9-7, but CSUP entered singles play with an early lead. The Thunderwolves captured the top two singles matches, but CC stuck in it with a win at No. 3 singles from Dellavalle, 6-2, 6-4. It was all CSUP after that, however, as they captured the final three matches in straight sets.  The following day, CC hosted Division II regionally-ranked Holy Names University, but fell 6-3. For the third time this week, Cerf and Edman teamed up to win at the top singles spot, 8-1. The duo also took credit for the Tigers’ singles wins as Cerf took the top line 6-4, 6-0 and Edman earned a straight set win at No. 2, 6-2, 6-3.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers went 2-1 over the weekend, beginning with a 9-0 victory over Howard Payne University on the road. The match began with some lopsided play in doubles action as Karyn Swink and Abby Knedlik won the No. 1 match 8-2. The No. 1 duo of Leanna Hayes and Camila Anguiano and the No. 3 team of Kelsey Buczkowski and Katie Watts each won their match 8-3. In singles action, Knedlik won her match at No. 6 singles without dropped a game, while Haynes (No. 1), Swink (No. 3) and Watts (No. 5) each won their matches by falling in only one game apiece. Aguiano took down her opponent in the fourth line 6-3, 6-0, while Alex Wheeler earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2. Friday, the Mountaineers faced the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, falling 5-4. The Cru took a 2-1 lead after doubles play, but SU posted three quick singles wins to take a lead of their own. The No. 1 doubles pair of Hayes and Anguiano earned the first point for the Mountaineers, while Wheeler Swink and Aguiano each posted straight set wins to put Schreiner ahead 4-2. Haynes battled hard in the top spot, but was edged in three sets to close the Schreiner lead to one, 4-3. UMHB posted straight set wins in the No. 5 and 6 matches to earn the win. The Mountaineers closed out the week with an 8-1 win over SCAC opponent Austin College. Schreiner swept through the doubles matches as Hayes/Aguiano won the top spot 8-2, Swink/Knedlik took the second line 8-3 and the No. 3 duo of Buczkowski and Watts won their match 8-5. Haynes also took No. 1 singles 6-1, 6-0, while Swink took the No. 3 spot 6-3, 6-1, and Aguiano posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 4 to secure the win. Buczkowski and Knedlik won their matches at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, in straight sets to close out the day.

Southwestern University
After more than three weeks off, the Pirates competed in three matches this week, going 2-1. Southwestern defeated LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist before falling to nationally-ranked University of Texas - Tyler on Saturday afternoon. The Pirates won two of three doubles matches against ETBU on Friday and were in a battle in singles play but edged out the Tigers. Julie Swets won 6-3, 6-3 in No. 2 singles while Nicole Wilson and Kali Rose used extended sets to win in No. 4 and No. 5 singles respectively. Maranda Kahl sealed the deal with a 6-2, 6-0 win in No. 6 singles over Ellis. Saturday morning the Pirates dominated LeTourneau, not dropping a single match the entire way. The closest the Yellow Jackets got were in No. 1 singles as Swets was forced to a third set tie breaker but pulled out the win 1-6, 6-4, 10-4. UT-Tyler quickly seized control in the final match of the day, defeating Southwestern 8-1, 8-5, 8-5 in doubles action. The Patriots took every single match in straight sets except for No. 5 singles where Rose earned the Pirates lone point of the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-3.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs took on two SCAC opponents this week, beginning with Austin College in a 7-2 win. In doubles play, TLU took the top two matches 8-5. Sofia Vega and Allison McLain teamed up in the top spot, while Caitlin Zarr and Megan Ingram took the No. 2 match. Brooke Taylor and Joni Baxley battled in the third line, but fell 9-8 (7-4). The Bulldogs came out strong in singles action as well, taking the top five spots. Vega, the second-ranked singles player in the west region, took her match 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 1 spot, while McLain (No. 2), Taylor (No. 4) and Baxley (No. 5) each posted straight set wins. Zarr needed a third set, but she came out with the Bulldogs’ final point in a 1-6, 6-0, 1-0 (10-8) win. The following day, TLU took on nationally-ranked Trinity in a SCAC battle. Vega earned the only point for the Bulldogs as Trinity cruised to an 8-1 win. Vega took her match in the top line 6-1, 6-2. McLain forced a third set tiebreaker in the No. 2 spot, but fell 6-0, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).

Trinity University
The Tigers faced off against two tough teams this weekend, beginning with NCAA Division II No. 14 Midwestern State University Friday. The Tigers fought hard, but fell 8-1 to MSU. Liza Southwick earned the only point in the match for TU as she won the No. 2 singles match 6-3, 2-6, 10-6. The Tigers were able to force tiebreakers in two other singles matches, but couldn’t come out with wins against the nationally ranked team. The following day, Trinity took on regionally-ranked Texas Lutheran, defeating the Bulldogs 8-1. TU jumped out to an early 3-0 lead after doubles, giving up just one game between all three matches. Southwick couldn’t take down the No. 2 singles player in the region in the top line, but the Tigers won the remaining five singles matches for the dominating win. Caroline White gave up just one game in the No. 3 match, winning 6-0, 6-1, while Gabrielle Roe (No. 4), Nicole Rueb (No. 5) and Cheyenne Duncan (No. 6) each gave up just three games.
