LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga – Two Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s swimming & diving teams competed this past weekend.
Austin College
The Austin College swimming and diving teams
got some strong swims but came up short against Colorado
College and La Verne, with the men falling 146-55 to La Verne
and 146-55 to the Tigers. Erik Gentzel led the men with a
first place finish in the 100 yard backstroke, coming in with a
time of 57.55 and Braedon Mitchell had a second place finish in the
50 yard freestyle with a time of 23.13. Josh Chanin added
a fourth place finish in the 200 yard individual medley with a time
of 2:13.78, with Gentzel finishing just behind him with a time of
2:16.58. Collin Vu had a strong showing in the 100 yard freestyle,
placing third with a time of 52.23.
Colorado College
The Colorado College men's swimming and diving team split a
Division III triangular meet Tuesday and Wednesday at Schlessman
Natatorium. The Tigers defeated Austin College 146-55 but narrowly
lost to the University of La Verne 115-103. Austin
Howlett remained undefeated by winning both the 1- and
3-meter events on Tuesday. He posted a score of 339.97 in the
1-meter event, then broke the school record in the 3-meter with a
score of 412.80. Teammate Ben Hicks finished third in each
event. Despite not having a full team due to illness,
the Tigers battled in the swimming events on Wednesday, led by
Crane Sarris and Brian Kopec. Sarris won the 50-yard
freestyle race in a time of 22.19 seconds, nearly one second ahead
of his closest competitor. He also placed second in the 100-yard
freestyle in 49.08 seconds. Kopec, meanwhile, captured the 500-yard
freestyle event in 5:23.02 and was third in the 200-freestyle with
a time of 1:54.89. Sarris and Kopec also
joined Chris Garrity and Erik Laitos on the
winning 200-freestyle relay team that touched the wall in
1:29.50.
