Football Recap (Week 11) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - In the final weekend of play, the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs claimed the ouright SCAC Championship with a 41-14 win over Southwestern and then learned on Sunday night that they will be playing in the postseason for the first itme in school history.

The Bulldogs wasted little time, getting a 39 yard kickoff return from Drake Dowling. On the first offensive play from scrimmage, Marquis Barrolle scampered up the middle, untouched, for a 40-yard score and a 7-0 lead.

After the defense held Southwestern, Trenton White kept the ball on a designed run and took it 75-yards for a score and a 14-0 lead, running only three offensive plays.

White struck again on the Bulldogs next offensive possession, as he scored his second rushing touchdown for a 21-0 first quarter lead.

A pair of field goals and a Caleb Oliver touchdown reception made it 34-0 going into the break. The Bulldogs controlled the ball for the remainder of the game, keeping the ball on the ground and running clock.

The Bulldogs outgained the Pirates 416-260 with most of Southwestern's yards coming in the second half.

On a day where throwing the ball was extremely difficult due to rain, cold, and wind, Barrolle led the offense with 136 yards rushing on 14 carries and a score while White added 135 yards rushing on eight carries and two scores. TLU produced 333 yards on the ground on Saturday afternoon.

Michael Wall led the way with eight tackles while Adam McGuire added seven tackles and a sack while Darian Candler had seven sacks and 2.5 tackles for loss. The Bulldogs did not force any turnovers, but were efficient, hold Southwestern to 1-of-17 on third downs. Texas Lutheran also had seven sacks on the day.

For the Bulldogs, it's their second consecutive SCAC title after winning their first one a year ago. They move to 9-1 (3-0 SCAC) on the regular season.

Texas Lutheran found out on Sunday that they will be in the NCAA Playoffs as they will take on the No. 2 team in the country, the Mary-Hardin Baylor Crusaders in Belton.

Tickets for the playoff game at UMHB will go on sale to the general public Wednesday from 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Thursday and Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Reserved tickets are $10 apiece, and general admission tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for students (ages 3-college age) and will be sold at Crusader Stadium Gate One in Belton or by phone at  (254) 295-4455.

Austin College (5-5, 1-2 SCAC) at Trinity University (4-6, 2-1 SCAC)
Trinity's football team finished off its regular season schedule with a 41-0 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Austin College on Saturday afternoon.

After a slow start to the game, the Tigers exploded with 31 points in the second half to finish off the win. The two teams were scoreless in the first quarter, but Trinity got on the board with a 33-yard touchdown pass from Mason Blaschke to Jeremy Simmons.

Simmons finished the game with three total touchdowns, rushing for 161 yards on 19 carries, and catching two passes for 35 total yards.  He scored both of his scores on the ground in the third quarter to account for both of Trinity's touchdowns. Simmons nabbed scores of 27 and 60 yards, and the Tigers led 24-0 at the end of the quarter.

Early in the fourth, Adam Saunders returned an interception 46 yards for a touchdown, followed by a score by Desmond King with 6:32 remaining. Payton Kisor added field goals in the second and fourth quarters. 

Trinity's defense got its first shutout since last season against Southwestern, and for just the second time since the 2009 season. The Austin offense was held to just 164 yards of offense in the game, which included 64 yards rushing.  The Tigers have held each of their last two opponents to less than 100 yards rushing, as well as connecting on all three extra-point attempts.

Julian Turner led the defense with 12 total tackles, as well as 1.5 tackles for loss.  Brad Hood had 10 tackles that included six solo stops. Brooks Ward and Brett H. Vaughn each added eight tackles a piece while Jeremy Halford has an interception.

Both teams wrap up their seasons, Trinity takes second place in the SCAC with a 4-6 overall record and a 2-1 SCAC record while Austin College finishes third with a 5-5 record and a 1-2 SCAC record.
