Trinity Upsets Top-Seeded California Lutheran to Move into Regional Finals

Trinity (30-9) plays 18th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges Sunday at 2:00 p.m. Pacific Time in the round of 16 at the Thousand Oaks Regional. C-M-S edged SCAC member, and 15th-ranked, Colorado College, 3-2, in the second round. Sunday’s winner advances to the NCAA quarterfinals November 21 at Newport News, Virginia.

It was sweet revenge for the Tigers, who lost 3-1 to Cal Lutheran earlier this season at Thousand Oaks. Trinity hosted the San Antonio Regional last year, and also fell to Cal Lutheran 3-1 in the round of 16. The Regals went on the quarterfinals and were eventual NCAA runners-up.

Trinity All-American Erin Cusenbary hit .533 in the match with Cal Lutheran, firing in 17 kills, making only one error, and accounting for 30 total attacks. Cusenbary also blocked five shots of the Regals.

All-American Maggie Emodi produced a double-double with 15 kills and 22 digs. Erika Edrington dished out 37 assists and 19 digs, along with six blocked shots. Shannon Courtney had 22 digs, Sarah Price made 13, and All-American Layne Hubbard picked up 11.
