Women's Soccer Recap (Week 4) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All of the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women's soccer teams began conference play this weekend.

Trinity University and Texas Lutheran University lead the conference with two wins apiece. Trinity's overall record improved to 6-0-1, continuing a five-game winning streak.

Southwestern University won their first game of the season, taking down Austin College. The Pirates are now 1-1 in conference play and 1-7-1 overall.

 

Non-Conference Games:

Dallas 0, Texas-Tyler 5:
The Crusaders took on the University of Texas-Tyler Tuesday, but couldn't control the strong UTT offense. Goalkeeper Elena Naccari recorded 12 saves on the day, but faced 17 shots. UTT outscored UD 38-9 in the game. Taylor Ray, Kayla Nguyen and Kayla Glenn each put up two shots.

Howard Payne 2, Texas Lutheran 0:
The Bulldogs were able to hold HPU without any goal through the first half, but gave up two goals in the 74th and 79th minutes. Nichole Glazener and Devin Crump split time in the goal, recording seven total saves through the day.  HPU outshot TLU 17-4 and put nine of those on target.

 

Conference Games:

#3 Trinity 2, Austin College 0:
The Tigers and the 'Roos faced off in the first match of conference play this weekend. The Tigers were able to hold AC without a single shot in the game, while marking 40 of their own. Trinity put 12 shots on goal, but AC goalkeeper Franchesca Lozoya was able to hold her own, marking ten saves on the day.  The 'Roos held Trinity without any goals until the 77th minute when Colleen Markey scored the  eventual game-winner. Jordan Bethea recorded the assists. Just five minutes later, Julia Camp put in an insurance goal off of an assist from Amanda Boe and Emily Jorgens. Camp recorded eight shots on the day while Jorgens, Markey and Robin Lipinski each put up four. Out of Jorgens's four shots, three were on target.

Texas Lutheran 1, Centenary 0:
The TLU Bulldogs and the Centenary Ladies matched up for the first time this season, each showing an impressive defensive effort. The Ladies held TLU without a goal for the first 38 minutes of the game, and then remained strong through the second half. CC goalkeeper Erica Coker put up five saves on the day. Sioned Kirkpatrick of TLU recorded the game-winner off of a rebound in the 39th minute. Karla Beltran recorded the assists. This is Kirkpatrick's fourth goal of the season. The Bulldogs put up 20 shots, six on goal, while facing just four shots from the Ladies. TLU Goalkeeper Erin Rose recorded three saves on the day in the shutout of Centenary.

Dallas 1, Southwestern 0:
The Southwestern Pirates were looking for their first win in the first conference match-up of the season, but fell just short, allowing a goal by Dallas's Nicole Johnson in the 96th minute. Both teams attacked offense, while UD was able to outshoot SU 24-15. Pirates' goalkeeper Katherine Rodgers recorded seven saves on the day. UD's Nicole Johnson scored the game's lone goal after putting up seven shots throughout the game. Southwestern's Malorie Lara led the Pirates with four shots on the day, three of which were on target. The Crusaders held Southwestern without a single shot in the overtime period.

Trinity 3, Dallas 0
In the second match-up of the weekend, the Trinity Tigers defeated the Dallas Crusaders 3-0. Dallas was only able to get one shot on target through the game, which was saved by TU goalkeeper Devan Osegueda. UD goalkeeper Elena Naccari faced 11 shots on target from the strong Tigers' offense, recording eight saves. Allison Carter led TU with four shots, two on goal, but the team's three goals came from Camp, her second of the weekend, Tierney Thomison on a penalty kick and Brigitte Taylor, assisted by Abby Tisdale.

Schreiner 1, Centenary 0:
The Schreiner Mountaineers played their first conference game this week after facing off against Texas Lutheran last weekend, beating Centenary 1-0 with an overtime goal from Beth Davis. The teams remained close throughout, with both teams only recording two shots on target. Centenary goalkeeper Erica Coker faced both shots for the Ladies, marking one save, while Schreiner goalkeeper Megan Morant was able to stop both of the shots she faced. Davis put up four of the Mountaineers six shots on the day. The Ladies four shots came from Marissa Hughes and Meredith Seale, with two apiece.

Southwestern 2, Austin College 1
In the third SCAC game to go into overtime this weekend, the Pirates picked up their first win of the season with a 2-1 defeat of the Austin College 'Roos with a double-overtime goal by Ana Gutierrez off of a corner kick. Southwestern's Sarah Bevins scored the first goal of the game just before halftime off of an assist from Carol Bentley. After halftime, AC's Tori Strunk tied it up with a goal of her own from 40 yards out. Southwestern goalkeeper Rodgers marked four saves and Austin College's Franchesca Lozoya put up two saves.
