Volleyball Recap (Week 3) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. - Trinity opened their home season in style, sweeping through the competiion at the Trinity Invite to move to 8-4 on the season.

Southwestern and Texas Lutheran were also at the Invite, both going 3-1 on the weekend against great competition. 

Meanwhile, Austin College put together another solid 3-1 weekend on the road to move to 12-3 on the season while Colorado College found success on the west coast.

Austin College
The 'Roos hit the road for the first time this season, heading to Conway, Ark. for the Hendrix College Invitational. Austin College started teh weekend with a 3-2 win over Henderson State before falling to the homestanding Warriors, 3-0. The 'Roos bounced back the next day to defeat Williams Baptist, 3-0, and Rhodes, 3-0. Presleigh Watson continued her outstanding start to the season, leading the 'Roos in kills, hitting percentage, and blocks. Watson totaled 12 blocks, and also had 32 kills against only five attack errors. Austin College will head to Irving, Texas for the first flight of divisonal games, taking on Centenary, Colorado College, and Dallas. 

Centenary College
The Ladies took to the road and played a pair of matches in Marshall, Texas against LeTourneau and East Texas Baptist. Centenary fell in four sets to the YellowJackets before falling in straight sets to the Tigers. Desiree Frey had 13 kills in the loss to LeTourneau while Allison Lazewski added 31 assists on the weekend. Haley Cubberly had 30 total digs. The Ladies will welcome in LeTourneau on Wednesday and will follow that up with their first flight of division games agianst Centenary, Colorado College, and Dallas in Irving.

Colorado College
The Tigers fell for the first time in 2014, dropping a weekday match to Division II school CSU-Pueblo. They went to Whittier, Calif. on the weekend where the compiled a 3-1 record, defeating Chapman, 3-0, and Whittier, 3-0. The following day, the Tigers earned another sweep over Pomona-Pitzer, but could not sweep the tournament as they dropped the final match to La Verne, 3-1. Abbe Holtze led the team in kills in four out of five matches, while averaging 13.6 kills a match and was second on the team in digs and blocks, picking up a double-double in three matches. Keli Sherwood led the Tigers defensive with 1.24 blocks per set. Colorado College will head to Irving, Texas for the first flight of divisonal games, taking on Centenary, Colorado College, and Dallas. 

University of Dallas
The Crusaders had a light weekend, playing one home match against Howard Payne. The Crusaders remain undefeated at home, knocking off the Yellow Jackets in straight sets. Mairin Gulifoyle picked up 14 kills in teh match while Jessie Koster had 22 digs. Cat Dowgwillo had a nice match with three blocks and two service aces. The Crusaders will take on McMurry on Tuesday adn then prepare to host the first flight of divisional games on the weekend, welcoming in Centenary, Colorado College, and Austin College.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers did not play this weekend, taking the week off. They will return to action on Tuesday, facing off against Our Lady of the Lake and then heading to Georgetown, Texas for the first flight of divsional games this weekend against Southwestern, Texas Lutheran, and Trinity.

Southwestern University
The Pirates put together a solid 3-1 weekend which included sweeps over George Fox, Puget Sound, and Linfield at the Trinity Invite in San Antonio. Southwestern's lone blemish came to No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, falling in four sets. Kirby Kincannon had an excellent weekend for the Pirates, hitting .391 for the weekend including a .611 hitting percentage against Linfield and a team high 11 blocks total. She had 11 kills against both Linfield and George Fox. Olivia Drummond also played well, earning All-Tournament honors with 25 kills and five blocks on the weekend. The Pirates will get ready to open conference play this weekend as they welcome in Trinity, Schreiner, and Texas Lutheran. 

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs continue to play well as they put together a 3-1 weekend in San Antonio at the Trinity Invite. Texas Lutheran dropped the first match to No. 18 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in five sets, but followed that up with a five set victory over Linfield. The following day the Bulldogs swept through Geroge Fox and closed the tournament with another thrilling five set win, this time over Puget Sound. Kristin Fording led the way with 47 kills on the weekend while Brette Threadgill added 35 kills. Megan Lee continues to impresss defensively, picking up 109 digs on he weekend. The Bulldogs open up conference play this weekend as they will do battle with Schreiner, Southwestern, and Trinity in Georgetown. 

Trinity University
The 19th-ranked team in the country opened up their home season with a sweep of the Trinity Fall Classic. The Tigers started the weekend with a five set with over George Fox followed by a sweep on 18th-ranked Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. The following day, Trinity was dominant, defeating Linfield and Puget Sound in straight sets. Layne Hubbard led the way offensively with 39 kills while hitting .327 for the weekend to go with 37 digs. Defensively, Shannon Courtney had an outstanding weekend, picking up 53 digs and adding eight service aces. The Tigers will go to Georgetown this weekend to open up conference play, taking on Southwestern, Schreiner, and Texas Lutheran.
