Women's Tennis Recap (Week 7) - Around the SCAC

LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s tennis teams hit the courts this week, traveling both east and west for spring break road trips.

Colorado College played four matches this week, going 2-2 during their trip to Orlando.

Schreiner University traveled to Oregon for their spring break road trip, facing off against tough competition from the Pacific Northwest.

Texas Lutheran University traveled around the southeast over their spring break to compete this week.

 

Colorado College
The Tigers began the week in Orlando, facing off against Concordia University (Wisc.) to earn a 9-0 win. CC swept the doubles competition, led by Fiona Cerf/Mary Edman in the top spot with and 8-4 win. Maggie Harwood/Maddie Cahill-Sanidas took the No. 2 line 8-2, while Anna Smith and Kira Lorenzen finished it out with an 8-2 win of their own at No. 3. In singles action, CC saw little challenge as they posted straight set wins in all six matches. In the top line, Cerf defeated the CU opponent 6-2, 6-1. Edman followed her with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 2, while Natalia Dellavalle posted a 6-0, 6-1 win in the third spot. Harwood, Cahill-Sanidas and Gillian Hyde won their matches at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively. Harwood didn’t give up a single game in her match, while Cahill-Sanidas gave up just one. Later that day, the Tigers took on regionally-ranked University of Wisconsin – La Crosse, but fell 1-8. CC’s only point came at No. 2 doubles as Harwood and Cahill Sanidas posted an easy 8-1 win. In singles action, Edman nearly earned the win, but fell 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (6). Harwood faced a similar fate at No. 4 singles as she rallied to take the second set, but fell in the tiebreaker, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 (7). The next day, CC faced Luther College, but fell 5-4 to the Norse. After doubles action, the Tigers jumped out to a 2-1 lead. Cerf and Edman posted an 8-2 win in the top doubles spot, while Harwood/Cahill-Sanidas won at No. 2. Smith/Lorenzen narrowly lost in the third spot, 9-8. In singles play, Cerf took the first-line with a 6-2, 6-2 win. The Tigers’ only other point came at No. 3 singles as Dellavalle posted a 6-4, 6-4 win. Luther won the other four singles matches in straight sets to complete their win. On the final day of the Florida trip, CC earned a 6-3 win over Bethel University. In doubles action, Cerf and Edman posted an 8-3 win at the No. 1 spot, while Harwood/Cahill-Sanidas won their fourth consecutive match at No. 2 doubles. Heading into singles play, the Tigers had a 2-1 lead. CC swept the top three spots, with Cerf and Edman posting identical 6-4, 7-5 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Dellavalle cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win in the third-line, while Cahill-Sanidas earned the Tigers final win at No. 5 singles with a 6-0, 6-2 victory.

Schreiner University
The Mountaineers traveled to Oregon over spring break to face off against tough competitors. They began the trip against regionally-ranked George Fox University. The Mountaineers took a 3-0 lead heading into singles play after earning wins from Leanna Hayes/Camila Anguiano at No. 1, Karyn Swink/Abby Knedlik at No. 2 and Kelsey Buczkowski/Katie Watts at No. 3. GFU erased the lead with wins at No. 1, 4 and 5 to even things out. In the final three matches, Alex Wheeler finished first in the No. 2 spot, earning a 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 win to give SU a 4-3 lead. Shortly after, Swink provided the winning point in the No. 3 spot with a 6-4, 6-7 (3), 6-1 win. The following day, the Mountaineers faced off against No. 35 Linfield College, but fell 9-0. The No. 2 doubles team of Swink and Knedlik got the closest to earning a point in doubles, but fell 8-6. The Mountaineers weren’t as successful in singles action, falling in straight sets in all six matches. To close out the trip, SU faced Willametter University, winning 7-2. The match began with singles, as the Mountaineers posted wins at No 3, 4, 5 and 6. Swink took the third line with a 6-1, 6-0 win, while Anguiano followed that up with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 4. Watts took the fifth-line with a score of 7-6 (3), 6-1 and Knedlik earned the final singles point at No. 6 with a 6-1, 6-0 win. In doubles action, the Mountaineers swept through the competition, posting 8-3 wins at both No. 2 and No. 3. The top pair of Hayes and Anguiano rallied back from a 3-7 deficit to take the match 9-8.

Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs began their week at Louisiana College, posting a 9-0 win. TLU lost just three games on the day, including just one in singles action. Sofia Vega and Allison McLain teamed up to take the No. 1 doubles spot in an easy 8-0 win. Caitlin Zarr and Megan Ingram paired at No. 2 defeated LC 8-1, while Brooke Taylor and Joni Baxley finished with the same score at No. 3. In singles action, Vega and McLain continued their shutout, each posting 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 1 and No. 2, respectively. Zarr faced the only game point from the Wildcats in singles, winning her match at No. 3 6-0, 6-1. Baxley, Ingram and Peyton Webster closed the match out with 6-0, 6-0 wins at No. 4, 5 and 6, respectively. The following day, the Bulldogs held off regionally-ranked Millsaps College for a 5-4 win. After doubles action, MC got out to a 2-1 lead. Taylor/Baxley record the point for the Bulldogs with an 8-1 win in the No. 3 spot. In singles play, the Bulldogs took the top three spots. Vega faced the biggest challenge of the day in the top spot, but won her match 6-7 (2), 6-3, 1-0 (10-6). McLain and Zarr posted straight set wins at No. 2 and 3, respectively. The Majors took the No. 4 and 5 spots to tie the match 4-4, but Ingram won the sixth line in straight sets to give TLU the win. The women closed out their winning week at Loyola University New Orleans with an 8-1 win. After doubles action, the Bulldogs held a 2-1 lead with wins at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots from Zarr/Ingram and Taylor/Baxley, respectively. TLU cruised through the rest of the match, posting straight sets wins in all six singles matches. McLain and Zarr each held their opponents off, winning the No. 2 and 3 matches with 6-0, 6-0 scores. Taylor won at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 6-1, while Baxley recorded a 6-1, 6-2 win in the No. 5 spot. Sofia Vega faced the most challenge in the top spot, but won her match 6-3, 6-2.
