LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. – All seven SCAC baseball teams were in action this past weekend including opening days for Austin College and Southwestern University.
Austin College
The 'Roos opened up their season this past weekend and went 2-1,
picking up a series win over Arlington Baptist. After jumping out
to a 9-0 lead, the 'Roos held off the Patriots and took an opening
day 9-8 victory. Blaine Tew picked up the opening
day win, allowing eight runs, only four earned, on 13 hits with six
strikeouts against just one walk. Thomas Oberg finished 4-for-5 at
the plate, and Gus Daniel went 2-for-4 with
two doubles. Todd Takabuki finished 1-for-3 with a double and three
runs, and Will Schommer finished 1-for-3 with three RBI. The next
day, Austin College picked up the series victory with a 6-5 win
over the Patriots as Takabuki had a walk-off double to seal the
win. Jeremy Halford and Takabuki each had two hits in
the game, and Daniel and Dylan Day each went 1-for-4 with two
RBI. Marshall Korn picked up the win in
relief after working 0.1 innings in the top of the
seventh. Takabuki and Schommer each went 3-for-4 in the 6-4
game three loss as James Arguello went 2-for-4. The 'Roos will hit
the road on Tuesday as they travel to take on East Texas Baptist at
6 p.m.
Centenary College
The Gents struggled this past weekend in Marshall, Texas
as they suffered a three game sweep to the East Texas Baptist
Tigers. Centenary held a 5-2 lead going into the seventh in game
one, but two runs in the seventh and three more in the eighth set
the Gents back to a 7-5 loss. Aaron Quintannilla paced
the offensive attack with four hits and two RBI, including a
two-run homerun in the sixth that placed the Maroon and White up
5-2. Cole Lavergne and Brooks Williams each added two hits to join
Quintanilla with multiple hits in the decision. It was more
heartbreak for the Gents the following day, dropping a 5-4 decision
in 12 innings followed by a 10-7 loss. Quintanilla paced
the Gents at the dish going 5-for-10 in the twinbill. Ian Graham
added a 3-of-7 day at the plate with a pair of RBI while Brooks
Williams went 4-for-11 with a RBI. Kody Carson led the Maroon and
White with three RBI in the effort with a pair of hits. Centenary
returns to the diamond on Tuesday as they travel to Tyler to take
on Texas-Tyler.
University of Dallas
The Crusaders went 3-1 this past weekend with wins over
Hardin-Simmons, Whitman, and Castleton. Against the Cowboys at Dr.
Pepper Stadium in Frisco, Dallas held on for a 7-6 victory.
Rene Vargas, Jr. pounded three hits out and added three RBIs in the
victory. Trevor Keele matched Vargas Jr. with a trio of
hits to tie a team-most, with one counting as a triple. Vargas Jr.
contributed the other extra base hit with a
double.. Ryan Hammonds (1-1) picked up
his first win of the year with six innings pitched. Keele
would make his first appearance on the mound of the campaign and
earned a save. Against Whitman, Martin Cronin earned his first
victory of the season in an 11-2 win in game
one. Alex Stack posted his
second-straight, three-hit afternoon and matched that amount with
runs scored. In the 6-4 loss in game two, Vargas Jr. and
senior Luciano Villanueva led the Dallas
offense with two hits apiece and were credited with two of three
RBI. Finally, the Crusaders capped the week with a 12-5 win over
Castleton. Stack claimed a game-high three hits out
of four at bats while Keele picked up his first win of the
season. Dallas is back on the diamond for its fifth game
in six days on Wednesday as it welcomes
Castleton.
Schreiner University
It was a tough weekend for the Schreiner Mountaineers,
going 0-3 this past weekend in losses to Birmingham-Southerns,
Ozarks, and Millsaps. In a 10-1 loss to nationally ranked
BSC, Bret Hill had two of Schreiner's seven hits in the
game. Against the Eagles, the Mountaineers dropped a heartbreaker,
2-1 in 10 innings. Jayme Kidder went eight of those innings,
allowing just three hits and striking out six in another gem of a
performance. Schreiner had six hits, with freshman
Hayden Fryrear accounting for two of those. Schreiner then got
bounced by Millsaps, 16-3, Quinton Volovar led the way with a RBI
double, the only RBI of the day. The Mountaineers are
back at home next weekend for a four-game series with
Whitworth.
Southwestern University
The Pirates opened up their season last week and went on
to go 2-2 throughout the weekend. It started with a wild game
against Howard Payne, one the Pirates dropped 15-13. The Pirates,
down 14-5, scored eight runs in the eighth and ninth innings to
give themselves a chance. Will Cates led the way at the
plate, going 3-4 with three RBIs, two walks and four runs scored on
a pair of home run blosts. Robert
Wehman also posted three hits and three RBIs in the
loss. The Pirates then went into a three game series against
Concordia, winning the series, 2-1. In a 7-5 win in the first
game, Ethan Hallmark led at the plate with an
outstanding 3-4 day with two RBIs. Riley
Wayland earned the win, his first of the season, with
three strikeouts, no runs and no hits in two innings of work. After
falling 11-6 in game two, Southwestern picked up the win with a 7-5
victory in 12 innings. Noah Clark earned the win
with no runs or hits while walking one and striking out one. Cates
had a huge outing, going 3-6 with one RBI and two runs
scored. Hallmark also went 3-6 from the
plate with one RBI and one run scored. Southwestern
heads to Millington, Tenn. for three neutral site contests
beginning with Fontbonne on Friday.
Texas Lutheran University
The Bulldogs went to Tyler, Texas this past weekend for the
Clements Fluid Classic and went 2-2 over the weekend. The Bulldogs
split the first game, defeating Louisiana College, 3-1, before
falling to Texas-Tyler, 9-4. The Bulldogs received a
second consecutive strong outing from senior
ace Aaron Aleman to pace them to the 3-1 win over
Louisiana College. Aleman (2-0) tossed the complete-game gem, going
the distance while striking out nine and allowing just four hits.
Tony Gennusa was 2-for-4 with a RBI triple while Klaus Bohrmann
powered his first homer of the season. After the loss to the
Patriots, the Bulldogs responded with a 7-3 win over LeTourneau.
Bohrmann was the catalyst for the Bulldogs' offense in
the game, driving in three runs. Dylan Drgac earned his
first win in a Bulldog uniform after tossing 8.1 innings. The only
runs scored against him came in the ninth inning, with the game
well in hand. The Bulldogs would drop the final game to the
Patriots, 8-6, despite a two RBI day from Justin Law. Gennusa added
a three hit ballgame. The Bulldogs are back in action at
home against Mary Hardin-Baylor at 7 p.m. on
Tuesday.
#16 Trinity University
The 16th-ranked Tiger baseball team went 1-2 over the
weekend, picking up a victory over defending ASC champion
LeTourneau before falling to Louisiana College and Texas-Tyler.
Against the YellowJackets, Zack Speer improved to 2-0 on
the season, giving up just two runs on four hits, and striking out
11 batters. Jose Santos led the Tigers with three hits
in four at-bats, scoring two runs to go with one RBI. Also scoring
twice were Carter MacEachern and Nick Jewett. Austin Singer also
had a huge day for the Tigers, driving in four runs and going 3-5
on the day. The Tigers were then tripped up by the Wildcats, 7-6,
and the Patriots, 4-2. Santos led the Tiger offense with
a 3-4 performance at the plate, picking up two runs and three RBI
in the game. Drew Butler and Jeremy Wolf had two hits each, while
Singer hit his third home run of the season - a solo shot to lead
off the fifth. Trinity returns home next weekend for a
three-game series against the University of Dallas.
