SUMTER, S.C. - Trinity sophomore Liza Southwick and first-year player Marie Lutz took fifth place in the Division III women’s doubles event at the USTA/Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Small College Championships on Friday.
Southwick and Lutz defeated No. 4 seeds Katarina Su and Anna Fuhr of Emory University 3-6, 6-3 1-0 (11-9 tiebreaker instead of third set) at the Palmetto Tennis Center.
The Trinity duo began the national event last Wednesday by winning a play-in match over sisters Courtney and Morgan Lawless of Whitman College 6-4, 3-6, 1-0 (10-7). In the main-draw quarterfinals on Thursday, they fell 1-6, 7-6 (9-7), 1-0 (10-2) to the third-seeded University of Chicago team of Megan Tang and Ariana Iranpour.
But the Tiger twosome bounced back to beat Laila El Dessouki and Carmen Lai of New York University 6-2, 6-3 in Thursday’s consolation semifinals.
Southwick and Lutz won the ITA Regional doubles title last month at the Butch Newman Tennis Center.
