Trinity Women's Tennis Falls to No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in Second Round

CLAREMONT, Calif.- The Tiger women’s tennis team’s season came to a close as Trinity lost 5-0 to the host and third-ranked Claremont-Scripps Colleges in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tennis Championships on Saturday.

Trinity completed the campaign with an 11-9 overall record, and a 10-3 mark against the Division III competition. The 32nd-ranked Tigers, led by first-year head Coach Gretchen Rush, were 5-0 winners over No. 36 University of Texas-Tyler in Friday’s opening round. Trinity made its fourth straight appearance in the NCAA postseason event, and the 19th overall.

Marie Lutz and Liza Southwick played No. 1 doubles, and wrapped up the dual-match season with a 10-10 record. The Tiger tandem received a bid to compete in the NCAA Doubles Championship May 21-23 at Mason, Ohio. Gabrielle Roe and Caroline White were the No. 2 doubles team, and finished the season at 10-5. Cheyenne Duncan and Blaire Porter represented the Tigers at No. 3 doubles.

Only two singles wins were needed by the Athenas after the doubles. Porter fell in straight sets at No. 4 singles, and finished up with an 8-6 record. White also lost in two sets at No. 3 singles, which proved to be the clincher for Claremont. The Tiger junior completed the campaign with a 10-9 singles record. All other matches were suspended after the win by Claremont.
