TANNER BROWN OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore guard from San Antonio, Texas, has been named the SCAC Men’s Basketball Player-of-the-Week for games played from Monday, January 31 through Sunday, February 6. SCAC Men's Basketball Release (Week 13)
Brown led the Tiger men's basketball team to a pair of home wins last weekend, defeating both Centenary and Austin College to remain on top of the league standings. Brown averaged 15.5 points/game and 9.0 rebounds/game to lead Trinity to the wins, hitting 52.6 percent (10-of-19) from the field and 42.9 percent (3-for-7) from three-point range. He was also a perfect 8-for-8 from the line for the weekend. Brown opened the weekend with his second double-double of the season, collecting 10 rebounds to go with 12 points on the afternoon. Against Austin College, Brown led all players with 19 points, eight rebounds, and three assists - despite playing just 21 minutes in the game. He hit 6-of-11 from the field, 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and buried all five free throw attempts. In that game, he scored seven consecutive points in a little over 90 seconds to put Trinity up nine late in the first half. Brown then scored four points and assisted on another bucket during an 8-0 Tiger run to start the second half - doubling Trinity's lead to 16 points less than two minutes into the period. This season, Brown is second on the team with 13.8 points/game and third among his teammates with 4.8 rebounds/game. He is also shooting 50.5% (106-for-201) from the field this season and 34.8% (32-of-92) from distance.
Other outstanding performances in the SCAC:
Senior guard Scott Cunningham of Colorado College averaged 21.5 points and 4.5 rebounds per game as CC split a pair of SCAC contests in his final two home games as a Tiger. In Friday’s 77-71 setback against Southwestern, Cunningham scored 21 points and grabbed five rebounds. In Sunday’s 75-74 victory over Texas Lutheran on senior day, Cunningham dropped 22 points, including the game-winning three-pointer as time expired. Cunningham, who now averages a team-best 14 points per game, has scored double-digit points in eight of the last nine games, four of which were 20 or more points. Senior guard Alex Dehoyos of Schreiner continued his torrid season last week, leading the Mountaineers to a pair of SCAC victories and extending their win streak to four, defeating Centenary and Austin College. Dehoyos averaged 19.0 points on 52 percent shooting (13-of-25) and added 5.5 rebounds, 3.5 steals, 3.0 assists and 0.5 blocks per game, while playing 37.5 minutes per night. Senior guard Kyle Poerschke of Southwestern averaged 22 points on 46.7 percent shooting, including 44.4 percent from deep, and 6.0 rebounds per game last week at the Pirates split a pair of SCAC contests. In Southwestern’s win over Colorado College, Poerschke poured in 22 points and grabbed nine rebounds. Senior guard Cameron Gims of St. Thomas led the Celts with 17 points on 63.6 percent shooting and added four steals, two rebounds and one block in a 30-point victory over TLU last week.
