SAMUEL CONTE OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore left-handed pitcher from Boston, Mass., has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, April 12 through Sunday, April 18.
Conte pitched in a pair of victories for the second-ranked Trinity baseball team last week, leading the Tigers to a 3-1 overall record that included a two-game SCAC sweep of Dallas. Conte earned the win in game two of Tuesday's doubleheader at Concordia (Texas), helping Trinity bounce back from a narrow loss in the opener. He then struck out the side in the seventh of game one at Dallas, finishing off a combined no-hitter to start the weekend series. Last week, Conte pitched 7.0 shutout innings, yielding just two hits and recording nine total strikeouts.
This season, Conte is 1-0 with an ERA of 0.71 after allowing just one earned run in 12.2 innings of action. He has recorded 14 strikeouts in six appearances and opponents are hititng just .122 against him this year.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore left-hander J.J. Slack of Southwestern made two relief appearances last week, earning the win in both. Slack took the mound in the top of the fourth inning against Hardin-Simmons with two on and one out and got out of the inning unscathed. He pitched 2.2 scoreless innings. Against TLU, Slack started the fifth inning and held TLU to just two runs (one earned) with two hits and eight strikeouts through five innings. For the week, he had 12 strikeouts and a 1.17 ERA with only three hits surrendered through 7.2 innings of work. Senior right-hander Chase Cutler of Texas Lutheran recorded a save in the 7-5 win over Southwestern on April 17. He pitched the final 3-2/3 innings in the conference victory. Cutler struck out five and allowed just two hits in the relief appearance. Junior right-hander Tyler Montemayor of Dallas pitched 4.2 innings of relief for the Crusaders baseball team in what would be a 7-5 loss in 10 innings to #2 Trinity University. Montemayor was effective overall allowing a hit and walk the first 3.2 innings before the extra frame. He fanned five batters to tie a season-high, including when he entered with two runners on and left them in scoring position. Senior right-hander Jake Thomas of Austin College had a strong outing on Saturday for the 'Roos, tying for fifth in SCAC history with 10.0 innings pitched as he took his start into the 11th inning, striking out eight batters against just one walk in a 5-2 loss. Graduate right-hander Josh Gilliam of Schreiner made two appearances, working 5.0 innings total, picking up a win and a save in the Mountaineers' three-game sweep of Austin College. He had four strikeouts and one walk and allowed six hits. Senior right-hander Preston Ludwick of Centenary started on the mound in game one of Saturday's doubleheader against St. Thomas and picked up the win to move to 7-1 on the season as he allowed just one earned run and six hits in six solid innings of work. He threw 101 pitches, 63 for strikes, and walked just two with a career and season-high 11 strikeouts. The versatile Ludwick was also 1-2 at the plate with three RBI and two runs scored. In game two of the DH he went 1-4 with two runs scored and a walk playing first base.
