SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Trinity University men's tennis advanced to the ITA Cup by sweeping the ITA Regional Championships in both singles and doubles on Sunday.
In a match featuring last year's conference co-Players-of-the-Year, Cameron Krimbill defeated Hunter Bajoit of Southwestern University 7-6 (1), 6-2 for his second career ITA Singles title. Krimbill also won in 2019, which was his first season with the Tigers. He finished in 11th place at the 2019 ITA Cup. Bajoit became the first Southwestern men's tennis player to reach the ITA Regional Championship match in program history.
Trinity's Alessio Azzalini advanced to the semifinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Julian Lee of LeTourneau on Saturday, but fell short in a 4-6, 4-6 loss to Bajoit later in the day.
The doubles team of Hao Nguyen and Christian Settles won their final after singles play, defeating Southwestern's Bajoit and Hemanshu Rambojun by a score of 6-3, 6-0 to win their first ITA Regional Championship. The doubles duo will be Trinity's first doubles representatives at the ITA Cup since 2018.
It was the second time in three years the Southwestern duo of Bajoit and Rambojun have advanced to the region final. They defeated the tournament's top seed, LeTourneau's Julian Lee and Patrick Baney, 8-5, to advance to Sunday's final.
Among other SCAC squads, St. Thomas' doubles squad of Jace Ware and Juanrodrigo Lopez made it to the round of eight before losing to the eventual champions, Nguyen and Settles of Trinity.
Krimbill, Nguyen and Settles will all compete in the ITA Cup, held October 14-17, at the Rome Tennis Center in Rome, Ga. The victories also qualify all three players as ITA All-Americans for this season. Krimbill is now a two-time All-American, having also secured the honor in 2019-20. This will be the first such honor for Nguyen and Settles.
