NORMAN, Okla. - The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) released the 2023 Division III PING All-Region honorees Tuesday afternoon, and five Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) men's golfers were recognized.
Schreiner’s Zhao Yung Gu, Southwestern’s Christian Rodriguez, St. Thomas’ Cade Kiser and Trinity’s Daniel Nunez and Jacob Mason, all ranked in the top-35 in the country in the most recent GolfStat rankings, earned All-Region honors. All five are competing this week at the Division III National Championships in Kentucky.
Yung Gu, the SCAC individual Medalist, who led Schreiner to a runner-up team finish at last month’s conference championship is currently ranked 24th in the nation with a 72.72 adjusted scoring average. A two-time All-SCAC performer, Yung Gu also earned the prestigious SCAC Elite 19 award this year.
Rodriguez is appearing on his second-straight GCAA All-Region team. The senior entered the NCAA Championships this week ranked 34th in the nation with a 72.69 adjusted scoring average. He amassed a 40-29 record against other top-100 ranked opponents and earned Honorable Mention All-SCAC honors at last month’s SCAC Championships.
Kiser finished tied for 6th at the SCAC Championship last month in helping lift St. Thomas to its first conference title in program history and a spot in the NCAA Championships this week. Heading into the week, Kiser was ranked 29th in the most recent individual GolfStat rankings with a 72.76 adjusted scoring average and a 19-4 head-to-head record against opponents in the top-100.
Both Tiger players received the honor for the second time in their careers. Nunez was an All-Region selection in 2020 and later earned 3rd Team All-American honors that year. Mason now has back-to-back All-Region awards after receiving the honor last year, and then also picking up an Honorable Mention All-American selection as well. Nunez arrived at this week’s NCAA Championship as the highest ranked SCAC player in the individual GolfStat rankings at 21st, while Mason checked in at 30th in the country.
