Trinity Honored with Athletic Training and Sports Information Staff of the Year Awards

SUWANEE, Ga. -- In voting done among members of the respective peer councils, Trinity University received both Sports Information Staff and Athletic Training Staff of the Year recognition.

Trinity joins Texas Lutheran University as the only other SCAC institution to sweep the prestigious honors in the same year. TLU has accomplished it twice, first back in 2019-20 and again last year in 2022-23.

The Sports Information Staff of the Year award began prior to the 2016-17 season, while the Athletic Training Staff of the Year award was introduced ahead of the 2012-2013 season.

The Trinity athletic training department is made up of six staff members: Marc Powell, the Head Athletic Trainer, along with associate athletic trainer Meghan Lovell and assistant athletic trainers Ashley Martinez, Chris Ramos, Nathan Nutter and Bianca Ramirez.

The group covered athletic training duties for all 18 NCAA men’s and women’s varsity sports. The staff played a major role in Trinity’s 15 combined SCAC Regular Season and Tournament Titles throughout the year. It is the mission of the Trinity University Sports Medicine Staff to provide the highest standard of medical coverage for all student-athletes who compete in intercollegiate athletics. This marks the second time in the last four years that Trinity’s athletic training staff has been recognized as the SCAC AT Staff of the Year and third time in its history. The Tiger training staff previously won the award in 2013-14 and 2020-21. Trinity is now the only athletic training staff in SCAC history to earn the honor three different times.

The Trinity University sports information department is made up of four staff members: Justin Parker, Associate Director of Athletics/Sports Information Director, Peyton Thibault, Assistant AD for Multimedia, Garret Landin, Assistant AD for Sports Communication and Josh Moczygemba, Executive Producer – Tiger Network. This is the second time in the last three years and fourth time overall Trinity has earned the honor. The Tigers’ SID staff previously won the award in 2016-17, 2018-19 and 2021-22. Trinity is the first staff to earn the prestigious award four different times.

Trinity’s sports information department handled media coverage and hosting duties for all 18 varsity sports, including covering SCAC Tournament Championships runs in women’s soccer, volleyball, men’s and women’s swimming and diving, women’s basketball, women’s golf, men’s and women’s tennis and men’s track. Additionally, the Trinity staff hosted and coordinated media coverage for the opening two round of the 2023 NCAA Men’s Soccer Championship, the 2024 NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship and the 2024 NCAA Baseball San Antonio Regional. The relentless effort from Thibault and Landin to create and post original content to help promote Tiger student-athletes has seen the growth of its social media platforms rise to over 11,600 followers combined between the main athletic X and Instagram accounts.

The Tiger Network, started in 2015-16, broadcasted more than 215 Trinity athletic events over the course of the year, 40 more than they produced during the 2021-22 year when the Tiger SID Staff last took home this honor.

"Congratulations to both Marc and Justin and their respective staffs on receiving these honors from their peers," said SCAC Commissioner Dwayne Hanberry. "The recognition specific to the good work done by both staffs at Trinity is certainly earned and should be honored."

"At the same time, the hard and important work done by all our athletic trainers and sports information directors should be recognized and celebrated," said Hanberry. "Without the dedication and commitment from these two vitally important groups, the student-athlete experience would suffer greatly. The role our athletic trainers and sports information directors play on a day-to-day basis is essential to everything we do and hope to accomplish as an athletic conference."
