John Key, Trinity University, Swimmer of the Week (Week 6)

JOHN KEY OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore from El Paso, Texas, has been selected the SCAC Men’s Swimmer of the Week for performances during the meets swam Monday, November 13 to Sunday, November 19. SCAC Swimming & Diving Release (Week 6)

Key had an exceptional weekend at the 2023 Tiger Invitational. He won three events, taking both the 100 (56.23) and 200 (2:01.85) breaststroke. Key broke four minutes in the 400 IM with a school record time of 3:59.66. He was just edged by his teammate to finish second in the 200 IM with a time of 1:51.53. In a prelims exhibition 200 backstroke, he also posted a best time of 1:51.28. Key also contributed relay splits of 56.18 (100 breast) and 46.98 (100 free) to the Tigers' winning weekend. 

Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Sophomore Collin Ralston of Colorado College had several breakthrough swims at the 11 team Wabash Invitational as he came away with two wins and a close second. Ralston won the 200 IM (1:54.41) and 100 breast (57.00), and placed second in 200 breast (2:06.23). He was also instrumental in the success of five relay swims. Sophomore Andrew Renninger of Southwestern helped the Pirates get points on Day 1 of the Trinity Tiger Invitational with an eighth place finish in the 200 IM (1:57.73) and an eighth place finish in the 400 medley relay (3:32.82). He took seventh overall in the 400 IM (4:12.96) and fourth in the 200 back (1:56.17). He also took fourth in the 1650 free (16:38.81) on Day 3, helping Southwestern to a third place team finish. Sophomore Caelan Sutton of Austin College had a great meet at the 2023 Tiger Invitational, posting personal best times in the 100 back (56.56), 100 fly (54.27), 100 free (48.72) and 50 free (22.97). Junior Ethan Spillers of University of the Ozarks placed eighth in the 200 IM (2:04.90), secpnd in the 400 IM (4:24.48), and sixth in the 200 fly (2:03.97) at the Delta State Thanksgiving invitational. First-year Lucas Blado of St. Thomas was a force for the Celts at the Trinity Tiger Invitational, taking first place in the 100 back consolation final with a time of 54.39, just shy of two seconds behind the champion racer. In the 200 back consolation, Blado clocked in at an impressive 1:57.51, outpacing seven other swimmers for a first-place finish.
