A Trio of SCAC Men's Tennis Athletes Earn ITA All-America Honors

TEMPE, Ariz. – Three Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) men’s tennis student-athletes have received NCAA Division III All-America honors from the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), as the organization officially announced its 2023-24 honorees.

Southwestern University’s Oscar Roy and Trinity University’s Jared Perry earned All-American honors in singles, while Perry also secured the distinction in doubles with partner Connor Whittington.

This year marks the third-straight year the SCAC has seen at least three athletes earn All-American honors, the first such streak since the league strung three-straight years together from 2014-2016.

The selection criteria for Division III All-Americans is the following: top eight seed in the NCAA singles tournament, win one round at the NCAA singles tournament, finish in the Top 20 in the final ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, win ITA Fall Regional Tournament, or win a first-round match at the ITA National Small College Championships (ITA Cup). All-American honors are awarded to doubles teams that are a top four seed in NCAA doubles tournament, win one round at the NCAA doubles tournament, finish in the Top 10 in the final ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings, win the ITA Fall Regional Tournament, or win a first-round match at the ITA National Small College Championships.

Roy, a junior from Toronto, Ontario, who earned SCAC Player-of-the-Year honors after amassing a 13-4 dual-match record at the No. 1 line for the Pirates, qualified for the 2024 NCAA Division III Singles National Championships last month and finished the year ranked 20th in the final ITA men’s singles rankings. The highest-ranked player in the SCAC in the final ITA singles rankings, Roy picked up wins against six ranked players in the top-40 including a pair inside the top-10. Named an ITA All-American last year in doubles, Roy is the first Pirate in program history to earn All-American status in both singles and doubles in a career.

Perry, a first-year from Tucson, Ariz., burst onto the scene this year, earning SCAC Newcomer-of-the-Year honors after helping the Tigers claim their 14th-straight SCAC Championship while competing at the number one singles line. Last month, Perry secured his All-American status in singles after he qualified for the Division III NCAA Singles Championship and advanced to the Round of 16 with a victory over fifth-seeded Ajay Mahenthiran of Case Western Reserve University (OH) in a three-set thriller. In singles, Perry finished his rookie campaign ranked 25th in the nation, boasting a 13-18 overall record, including a 4-3 record in his final seven matches.

Last fall, Perry was joined by junior teammate Connor Whittington to win the ITA Regional Doubles Championship in October to secure All-American honors in doubles. The duo defeated a pair of teammates in Ethan Flores and Conor Kaczmarczyk to win the title and earn All-American status.

The four SCAC selections mark the 119th, 120th, 121st and 122nd All-American accolades in SCAC men’s tennis history. Perry is the first SCAC athlete since Trinity’s Wilson Lambeth in 2019 to earn All-American honors in both singles and doubles in the same season.
