SAN ANTONIO, Texas - In the final quarterfinal of the weekend, top-seeded Trinity University outlasted eighth-seeded Schreiner University, 84-81, Sunday evening in SCAC Men’s Basketball Tournament action played at Calgaard Gymnasium on the campus of Trinity. Official Tournament Website 

Tanner Brown's clutch corner three-pointer with 1:22 remaining gave the Tigers an 84-78 advantage, an advantage the Mountaineers could not overcome.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Trailing 28-20 with 7:10 remaining in the first half, Schreiner went on 13-0 run to take a 33-28 lead - their largest of the game - with 4:25 remaining. Alex Dehoyos had 16 of his game-high 29 in the opening half.
  • Trinity went on a run of its own to close out the half, outscoring the Mountaineers 12-3 to take a four-point lead (40-36) into the lockerroom.
  • Trinity outshot Schreiner (50.0 to 37.8 percent) in the first half. The Mountaineers hit 8 of 25 from distance in the opening half that kept the score close.
  • Trinity led by as many as 11 in the second half (55-44 with 16:47 remaining) but Schreiner would not go away. The Mountaineers fought back to tie the game at 66 with 7:52 remaining and took the lead at 72-70 with 4:54 left in the contest.
  • Schreiner's last lead was 74-73 after two free throws by Chase Pinter with 3:41 remaining in the game.

NOTABLE
  • This was Trinity head coach Jimmy Smith's first SCAC tournament game since the 2016 final when he led Texas Lutheran to its second consecutive tournament title.
  • This was the second straight year and the third time in the last four seasons that Schreiner and Trinity have met in the SCAC tournament. Schreiner had won the previous two tournament matchups, including a 75-54 win at last year's event.
  • Schreiner shot 37 three-pointers in the contest, which tied for the second-most in a SCAC men's tournament game in league history. Centre also hoisted 37 three-pointers in its first round loss to Oglethorpe at the 2004 tournament. Birmingham-Southern holds the single-game mark with 39 in its first round win over Dallas at the 2012 championship.
  • With the win, Trinity will make its 14th appearance in the SCAC semifinal round - the most by any program in the history of the event.
  • Schreiner ends its season with a 2-7 mark.
UP NEXT
Trinity (9-1) advances to take on Austin College in the semifinal round next weekend which will be played Sunday at 1 pm CT at Trinity. In their one previous match up this season, Trinity defeated Austin College, 89-66, on Feb. 23. This will the first-ever game between the two long-time conference members in SCAC tournament play.
