BOULDER CITY, Nev. – Following the opening round of the 2024 NCAA Men’s Golf Championships, Schreiner University sits in a tie for 15th-place heading into tomorrow’s second round. The 72-hole championships are being held at Boulder Creek Golf Club, which features both the Boulder Creek and Legacy courses. Live Stats
The Mountaineers, playing on the more difficult par-72, 7,077-yard Legacy course, fired an opening round 294 (+4), just seven shots behind a spot in the top-10. Methodist currently leads the field after firing a remarkable 271 (-17) on the Boulder course to open play at the 2024 championships. Of the current top-10, seven teams played the Boulder track day one, while just three inside that top 10 were on the Legacy track. Schreiner posted the seventh best score of the opening day on the Legacy course.
Schreiner, which combined for 15 birdie through the opening 18-holes and finished tied for fourth in par three scoring average at an even 3.00, has three individuals inside the top 65, led by Matthew McKenzie. McKenzie shot an even-par opening round of 72 and currently sits in a tie for 46th. He finished the day with four birdies and is one of 61 athletes in the field of 221 that is currently even par or better. Rounding out the Mountaineers inside the top-65 are Drew Hermesmeyer and John Martinez who both are currently tied for 62nd after opening the Championships with one over rounds of 73. Hermesmeyer finished the first round with three birdies, while Martinez carded one.
Additionally, the SCAC sent a pair of individuals to vie for National Championship Medalist honors. SCAC Champion, Centenary’s Andrew Bennett is tied for 80th after opening with a 2-over round of 74. Bennett carded two birdies on day one. Trinity’s Jacob Mason, who is playing in his third-straight NCAA Championships, opened with a 4-over par 76 and currently sits tied for 121st. Both Bennett and Mason played the more difficult Legacy course to open the Championship.
Round two gets underway on Wednesday as both Schreiner and the two individuals will shift to the par-72, 7,377-yard Boulder Creek course at Boulder Creek Golf Club. The Mountaineers tee-off their second round at 12:55 p.m. local time, while Bennett and Mason are scheduled for 8:05 and 8:10 a.m. respectively. The top 18 teams after tomorrow's results will make the cut and continue to rounds three and four. The top six individuals not on those 18 teams will also advance to play for the individual title.
