JOSEPH CHAVANA OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Laredo, Texas, has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, April 4 through Sunday, April 10. SCAC Baseball Release - Week 9
Chavana tossed a two-hit shutout to open No. 21 Trinity's SCAC weekend series at home against St. Thomas, helping the team to a 4-0 overall record for the week. Chavana threw a complete-game shutout for the second consecutive outing on Friday, giving up just two hits over the nine-inning effort, and striking out six batters. This season, Chavana leads Trinity with a 3.48 ERA and a 5-1 overall record in his 12 appearances. Friday marked just his second start of the season and he has recorded 40 strikeouts in 41.1 innings pitched.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
First-year left-handed pitcher Tyler Herrera of Centenary continued his masterful rookie season with another superb performance last weekend versus Dallas. Herrera threw seven scoreless innings in a 14-5 win over the Crusaders on Saturday in game one of a doubleheader. He improved to 5-0 on the season and lowered his ERA to a staggering 0.69. Herrera allowed only four hits, walked three, and struck out eight. He faced 28 batters and threw 117 pitches, 72 for strikes. He recorded his third start this season with six or more strikeouts. Senior pitcher Ben Ludwig of Southwestern was dominant in the Pirates’ 18-0 win over Schreiner, striking out eight in seven innings of work for the complete-game shutout, allowing only three hits and one walk. Junior right-hander Joe Burch of Texas Lutheran rang up a career-high 14 strikeouts in a win over Austin College last weekend. Burch allowed eight hits and five earned runs in the win.
