JOSEPH CHAVANA OF TRINITY UNIVERSITY, a sophomore right-handed pitcher from Laredo, Texas, has been named the SCAC Baseball Pitcher of the Week for games played from Monday, March 28 through Sunday, April 3. SCAC Baseball Release - Week 8
Chavana tossed a two-hit shutout in his only appearance last week, as the 22nd-ranked Tiger baseball team went 4-0 overall and swept its SCAC series against Dallas. Chavana struck out 10 batters in his first career complete game and his first career shutout, allowing just two hits in the series opener against Dallas - which was also his first start of the season. This season, Chavana is 4-1 with an ERA of 4.45 in 32.1 innings of work. He has struck out 34 batters and opponents are hitting .278 against him. Chavana has appeared in 11 games this season and he has come out of the arm barn in all but one of those this season.
Other Outstanding Performances in the SCAC:
Senior Ryan Culp of Austin College tossed a gem to lift the 'Roos to their first win over Southwestern since 2018, giving up one run on just three hits in 8.0 innings with nine strikeouts. Culp gave up his lone run on two hits in the top of the first, and then didn't allow another hit until the eighth inning on his way to earning the victory. Junior right-hander Parker Primeaux of Centenary picked up the win on the mound for the Diamond Gents in game one of a DH last Saturday against Schreiner in Kerrville, Texas. Centenary won 8-6 in 13 innings and Primeaux went 6.2 innings in relief with two runs, both earned, and five hits with one walk and eight strikeouts. He improved to 5-3 this season. First-year pitcher Ryan Corbett of Southwestern threw 3.1 scoreless innings in Southwestern's 8-5 win over Austin College, striking out four with no walks and four hits allowed. Junior Landon Murray of St. Thomas struck out four and allowed just one run in eight innings of work in a tough 1-0 loss last Friday night. It was the first 1-0 SCAC contest since TLU defeated Southwestern, 1-0, back on April 22, 2016. Junior right-hander Joe Burch of Texas Lutheran was dominant on the mound for the Bulldogs, tossing seven shutout innings in Friday night's 1-0 win over St. Thomas. Burch scattered five hits over seven innings of work with five strikeouts and one walk.
